Stephen ‘Valentino Rossi’ Vieira rebounded from a third place finish in the opening motorcycle event to put on a scorching display to win the next two races to crown an outstanding day at Bushy Park in Barbados yesterday.
The Guyanese speedster was beaten in the first race by dreadlocked Barbadian Learie Carasco and Arthur Cumberbatch in that order.
However, pre-race favourite Brook Miller fell during the race and was forced out of activity for the rest of the day, while the eagerly anticipated rematch between Vieira, Cumberbatch and Carasco failed to materialize when the latter experienced mechanical difficulty and did not take the starter’s orders for the remainder of the day.
Vieira, who had won two races last year as well went on to dominate the next two events with fellow Guyanese Maurice Menezes failing to secure a podium spot, but performed creditably.
Also, doing well for Guyana was Group 3B driver Gavin Gayadin, who in his first outing at the Circuit produced some inspiring driving to land a first place, two thirds, a seventh place finish and a DNF.
He was able to grab two valuable points for Guyana in the Caribbean segment after placing seventh in one of the races. Speaking at the end of the day’s racing Gayadin said he was extremely pleased with his performance, referring to it as awesome in his debut at the track. “It felt awesome to represent my country, I never thought that I would feel this way,” he told Kaieteur Sport.
Asked what the experience was like driving on the track, Gayadin said the Circuit is more suited to good drivers and not necessarily one that is aided by the machine’s input.
Quizzed about how he felt racing in Barbados for the first time, Gayadin disclosed he was really surprised by the reception he received from the fans something which he hasn’t had back home.
“I drove at Dover Speedway in Jamaica three times in the past, but this here is a new experience for me.”
Meanwhile, Group 4 drivers Andrew King and Kevin Jeffrey found the going much tougher against the likes of The Maloney Clan led by Mark, his brother and defending champion Stuart and patriarch Doug.
Mark ended with two wins to capture the champion driver trophy despite a slow start to the day.
Jeffrey, who benefitted from a scrappy opening race where David Summerbell crashed into Stuart which resulted in him having to re-enter the pits, while other top contenders Doug, Roger Mayers also suffered similar incidents and had to return the pits as well.
Jeffrey eventually held off a fast charging King to claim second just ahead of the local champion.
King then secured fifth and seventh place finished in the next two races in what could best be describes as an average day by his standards, while Jeffrey added fifth and sixth place finishes to boost Guyana’s points standing in the Series.
Gavin Gouveia’s best finish for the day was a fourth place. The final individual and country point standings will be known in a subsequent issue.
