D’Edward are NBS 2nd division cricket champs
Beat Hopetown in all West Berbice final

Man-of-the-Match Ryan Sutherland hit a responsible 65 to lead D’Edward to a 4-wicket victory against Hopetown at Blairmont yesterday in the Final of the 2008 New Building Society (NBS) 40-overs Berbice 2nd division cricket competition.

5) and Joel Singh (28*) contributed crucial runs to see the West Bank Berbice side to 183-6 with 9 balls to spare after dismissing Hopetown for 181 in 39.2 overs despite a fine 51 from Artley Bailey.
Electing to bat in sultry conditions, Hopetown slumped from 99-1 although D’Edward produced a sloppy display in the field and dropped Bailey twice.
A large and colourful crowd watched as Bailey and Marlon O’Donaghue (11) added 39 for the first wicket before Navin Rampersaud had the latter taken at cover. Skipper Kenje Sedoc (put down twice off spinner Derrick Lalsa) and Bailey then took the score to 99 before Bailey skied Eon Abel to square-leg.
After Abel removed Sedoc 10 runs later and Delon Wayne (12) was sent packing by Lalsa at 126-4, Hopetown lost their way as only Tyron Liverpool (24), Claude Saul (12) and Ludwig Joseph (11*) reached double figures as D’Edward, playing in their first final after five defeats at the semi-final stage, fought back.
Christian France (2-25), Abel (2-28), Rampersaud (2-51) and Romaine Boodram (2-32) picked up important wickets for D’Edward.
Sutherland and Ramanan, who struggled badly with his fitness, gave D’Edward a solid 89-run foundation before Ramanan, who was dropped on 24, cut a catch to point after making 26 as Sedoc made the break-through.
Danger man Boodram, arguably the team’s most accomplished batsman, was stumped for a duck 2 runs later off Joseph while Corwin Wayne, who finished with 3-39, struck twice in the space of 1 run as the West Coast Berbice slipped to 119-4.

Wayne had Sutherland stumped and also removed Abel, a former Berbice Inter-County batsman. When Wayne’s nephew Delon Wayne held a stupendous catch diving to his left at point off his uncle’s bowling to get rid of Sham Rahaman (6) at 135-5, the game was once again wide open and the tension building.
Herilall, who fell with victory just 5 runs away for 25 and Singh, a football Goalkeeper for the Berbice team, staged a recovery by putting together 41 for the 6th wicket to set the stage for the victory in the competition which attracted over 100 teams.
Singh flicked a ball off his legs for his 3rd boundary to trigger wild celebrations from the vociferous D’Edward fans.
This was the first time that two West Berbice teams had qualified for a Countywide Berbice final and the West Berbice Cricket Association was praised for the work it is doing in developing cricket in Region 5.
Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) executive Anil Beharry, a former Berbice left-arm spinner and Manager of the New Amsterdam branch of NBS, committed the Bank to continued sponsorship and congratulated the teams for a competitive match.
Beharry noted that 4 of NBS’s 7 branches in Guyana are located in Berbice and stressed that NBS understands its responsibility to the community it served resulting in its contribution to sports development.
BCB Executive Carl Moore noted that the 2nd division competition played a key role in Berbice cricket by giving the youths an opportunity to improve their skill and progress to the first division and Inter County levels.
D’Edward took home the beautiful NBS trophy and $50,000 while Hopetown collected $30,000 for their efforts. Delon Wayne received a special prize for his brilliant catch while several cash prizes were presented for outstanding contributions during the competition.
The 2009 competition is expected to commence by next month.
