Veteran Clyde Butts uses his feet to drive spinner Damien Vantull to the cover boundary at MSC yesterday.
By Sean Devers
In sweltering heat, Troy Gonsalves (80), Chris Patandin (50) and Quincy Ovid-Richardson (54) yesterday registered half-centuries while off-spinner Steven Jacobs took 4-52 on the opening day of the Georgetown Cricket Association Cellink Plus 2-day first division cricket semis finals.
At the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) ground, National Under-17 opener Ovid-Richardson stroked 8 fours in 54 as GNIC, electing to bat first, reached 277 against MSC.
Skipper Jacobs got support from Guyana Under-17 pacer Seon Daniels (2-40) for MSC who were in trouble on 155-7 by the close with Damien Vantull (33) and wicketkeeper Sarfraz Esau (20) featuring in an unfinished 8th wicket stand of 31. Teenage leg-spinner Ronale Bourne has so far picked up 3-56 while the 52-year-old Butts removed Guyana players Shemroy Barrington and Orin Forde to finish the day with 2-36 after making a quick-fire 27 with 3 fours and a six in the GNIC innings. Richardson and Elton Baker (24) added 54 for the first wicket before left-arm spinner Vantull removed Baker while leg-spinner Danny Narayan had Richardson stumped at 115-2.
Martin Rajmangal (40) and Shawn DeSouza (22) offered fight on the small ground before Daniels removed them both as GNIC slipped to 172-6.
Clyde Butts continued his good form in the competition with a cameo 27 before he was taken at short-leg off Jacobs while Ken Alphonso, who dumped 5 sixes in a pugnacious 38 and added 47 for the last wicket with Wayne Blond (9*) before he drilled Jacobs to short mid-wicket.
MSC dropped several catches while Esau missed 2 stumping opportunities in 2 balls off Jacobs in a ragged day in the field for the host.
Delvon McEwan (1) edged Blond to the keeper and Barrington (5) was bowled by the wily Butts to leave the score on 10-2.
Forde lofted Butts for a 4 and a 6 off successive balls before an irresponsible swipe at Butts off the next ball resulted in a skied catch for the keeper.
Jacobs looked organized in his 20 before he was leg before to Bourne while Collis Butts, the son of Clyde, trapped Jeremiah Harris (19) leg before Vantull and Esau staged a recovery.
At Everest, the host, surprisingly asked to bat on a slow track, made 246 with Gonsalves leading the way with an attractive 80. He got support from Pattandin (50), Ryan Rajmangal (30) and Chanderpaul Hemraj (27).
National all-rounder Chris Barnwell was unbeaten on 47 by the close as DCC reached 105-3 after West Indies Under-19 selectee Trevon Griffith fell for 30.
Night watchman Trevon Garraway is unbeaten on naught while Guyana Under-17 leg-spinner Amir Khan has picked up 2 wickets and Gonsalves claimed the other.
Earlier, former West Indies Under-19 batsman Rajendra Chandrika (7) popped a catch to cover at 16-1 before the left-handed Rajmangal and Pattadin took the score to 74 before Rajmangal was bowled by Squires.
Pattandin hit Barnwell on the road for a straight six before being dropped at slip 5 balls later while new Skipper Abhilash Deokie, who never suggested permanence, skied national left-arm spinner Totaram Bishoo, to mid-off.
Squires took 3 wickets for DCC and got support from Bishoo and former Guyana Under-19 left-arm spinner Leroy Bristol who took 2 wickets each.
Both matches continue today from 09:30 and the winners will clash in the final this weekend.
