STRAND, NEW AMSTERDAM – While some criticised the Guyana Fire Service for its slothful approach, residents of new Amsterdam are heaping praises on the firefighters for the job done in containing a blaze that erupted sometime between 16:30 and 17:00 hours at a two-flat building in Nanda’s Alley, Lot 13 Strand.
Their action prevented a GUYOIL gas station which houses a DIGICEL outlet, a three-storey boutique, supermarket and other structures from going up in flames.
The fire also threatened the New Amsterdam Town Hall and Market, which is situated across the road from the burning building.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
The burnt building was situated in the lot behind the petrol station.
Patrick Alexander, owner of the Simmo Workshop, located in the bottom flat of the burnt building had left his business place about 16:30 hours.
“I just get home and going to the toilet and I get a phone call saying fire by the workshop.”
He aborted his ‘call of nature’ and headed back to the location.
“The men try to throw water. I broke the door and take out about three motor cycles. I lost everything.”
Alexander said he is a tenant and the owner of the building, which had no electricity, is overseas.
He estimated his loss to be in the vicinity of $20 million.
According to Alexander, there were five other motor cycles, tools, spare-parts and other paraphernalia that were all burnt up in the fire.
The unoccupied structure on the adjacent plot was badly scorched; minimal damage was done to the rear of the Melody’s supermarket.
Retired Councilor of the People’s National Congress, Waldron Kendall, was one of those to commend the Guyana Fire Service.
“When I came here, the fire was already blazing for 30 minutes. The tender was already in operation and they did a good job. They prevented the fire from getting to any other building. The gas station is just in front.”
The blaze attracted a large crowd of onlookers.
Mr. Kendall said he got the impression that the Guyana Power and Light had already disconnected the power supply to the area.
However, about 17:15 hours, the transformer on the Strand just across the road from the scene of the fire began sparking, sending onlookers scampering for cover.
Minutes later an employee from the power company mounted the electricity pole and rectified the problem.
