A terrible lapse in concentration by Guyana’s Andrew King has placed him under severe pressure to upstage his rivals today in the Barbados Auto Racing League Meeting which is being held at Bushy Park Circuit. King, who had shown terrific speed since his arrival on the island, blundered by going back into the pits after finishing second to Barbadian Roger Mayers during qualifying sessions yesterday instead of going to the weights station to verify his weights.
The Guyanese speedster, who reached a peak of 41.864 along with Roger Mayers, who clocked the fastest time of 41.068 in his Ford Focus and Stuart Williams who ended fourth quickest, registering 42.376, will all have to start from the back of the grid after infringing the rules and was subsequently disqualified by the stewards.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport shortly after the session, he admitted that it was a brain failure on his part and he has no one to blame but himself. He said that the car is performing well, but the track is not conducive for easy passing and that could make his chances of winning extremely difficult. “We have the car handling well, but because of my mistake it places us at a real disadvantage so I’m very disappointed, especially when you consider that we’ve been really consistent throughout,” King expressed.
Meanwhile, Kevin Jeffrey, who has been experiencing some degree of difficulty since his arrival qualified ninth, but will now assume sixth position following the fiasco.
The other Guyanese on show were Gavin Gayadin, who had his intake manifold broken, forcing a decrease in power that caused him to qualify sixth after returning a time of 50.503, while Group 2a Gavin Gouveia will start seventh after clocking 50.690. Bikers Stephen Vieira and Maurice Menezes clocked 46.738 and 50.201 to start fourth and ninth respectively.
In other outstanding performances, Barbadian Shawn King will start on pole in the Group 3 B& C category, while Arthur Cumberbatch will do likewise in the ‘big’ bikes division after a dominating performance, edging out compatriot Brook Miller.
With what was seen over the last two days of practice and qualifying sessions a packed house is expected today.
