In an effort to ensure that the organization is not infiltrated by criminally-minded elements the Guyana Defence Force Recruitment Board is currently in the process of vetting potential recruits for the second Basic Recruit Course which is to be conducted in 2009.
The initiative is being intensified in the wake of the recent embarrassment to the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), in the form of three of their Coast Guard ranks being charged with the murder of Bartician Dweive Kant Ramdass.
According to the army, potential recruits who have completed their documentation are then interviewed by the Board to determine their suitability to become soldiers.
The Board is meant to appraise the potential recruits while providing transparency and credibility to the army’s recruitment process.
It comprises the Colonel General Staff; the Commanding Officer, Training Corps; the Officer Commanding, General Personnel Department; the Force Sergeant Major and one other Warrant Officer, and a civilian selected by the Office of The President.
In the wake of the Coast Guard incident Chief of Staff, Commodore Gary Best had expressed shock by the actions of the ranks.
“I just want you to know that this is not the Guyana Defence Force, this is not the army, it’s not what we are set up for, neither do we train anybody to do these kinds of things,” Best told the family of the dead Bartician during a visit with them last Saturday.
He stated that the army is prepared to search internally to ferret out those persons who may have criminal minds.
He said that boat owners and other persons who ply the rivers must feel safe whenever they see the Coast Guard since the Coast Guard has the authority to operate in the rivers.
He assured that the GDF will continue to discharge its duties since as an organization it will have to rise above the incident.
“We’re not going to separate ourselves from this activity but I’ll say this, this is not the face of the GDF, this is just some rogue elements in the Defence Force and we have to look internally and deal with the others,” Best told the grieving family.
