Two (2) of Guyana/British Guiana Prominent Sportsmen of the fifties (50’s) and sixties (60’s) are in need of Urgent attention. The name Compton Julian might not ring a bell amongst youngsters of this generation but this former Thomas United Footballer is probably one of the best these shores have ever produced.
Julian along with Monty Hope, deceased Hubert Braithwaite and George Greene were part of the Caribbean Squad that toured the United Kingdom in 1959. Julian also dominated Regional Rivals and was outstanding at the Soft Shoes Version. We need not mention his exploits playing for Thomas United at the local level.
But now this former Caribbean Star and Ambassador for over a decade of dedicated and yeoman service to both the Region and then British Guiana has fallen. His last place of abode was the Salvation Army Hostel in Kingston.
A recent check by yours truly and Guyanese International Cricket Commentator and Former President of the Guyana Football Association and Guyana Basketball Federation, Mr. Joseph Reds Perreira, the Administrator of that Institution have indicated that Mr. Julian has left the Institution.
Reports have indicated that Burnham Court Bleachers is now his night rescue and if someone from the National Sports Council or the Ministry of Sports and Culture stroll along Robb Street between Camp and Alexander Streets they would encounter the sorrowful story of probably the first player from Guyana (then British Guiana) to sign a semi professional Basketball contract.
Charles Torani Clement is a night watchman in bad health, probably with no fixed place of abode. This former semi-professional player proudly carried the Golden Arrow Head while rubbing shoulders with the best of Europe and Brazil as a Pro and when Ravens toured the Twin Island Republic for the first time in 1960 Torani was the most outstanding player.
He also stood tall against the touring American Union of Amateur Athletics Team of 1965 although the then British Guiana lost all three (3) matches at the Queens College Auditorium, Charles Torani Clement was the player that drew most attention from opponents that were superior in every aspect of basketball, so please Ministry of Sports and Culture take some time off from the Inter Block Competitions and divert some urgent attention to two (2) Great Sons of the Soil who have paid their dues both locally and abroad.
They have already sung God Bless the Queen and Dear Land of Guyana but now the Chorus is different. Rick Ashley’s Cry for Help.
