The public trust in the security forces took another massive dent yesterday when a group of men dressed as policemen held up a delivery truck and made of with about $10M.
The incident occurred at about 18:00 hours on the lonely Bee Hive Public Road on the East Coast of Demerara.
The delivery truck, which is owned by Mohamed Latiff, was being driven back to its base in the Corentyne after delivering goods when the robbery occurred.
At the time, the driver was sitting with a porter in the front cab, while another porter was in the enclosed tray.
The driver reported that as they approached a lonely spot in the road they were signaled to stop by a man neatly dressed in a Police traffic rank uniform.
Three other men who were dressed in shirt-jacs and dark-coloured pants were standing nearby, next to a parked silver-grey Toyota motorcar.
Since they all appeared to be policemen, the driver obeyed the instructions and pulled over to the shoulder of the road.
The ‘Traffic Rank’ approached the driver and requested to see his vehicle documents which were duly handed over.
The other men then approached the truck and demanded that the tray be opened so that they can check the cargo.
The men said that they did not have the slightest idea that the men were about to rob them so they willingly complied with the instructions.
When the bogus cops spotted two boxes containing cash the mood suddenly changed.
One of the porters was struck in the head with a gun and the men proceeded to lock the employees into the enclosed tray after grabbing the boxes.
The truck, escorted by the grey Toyota was then driven to the Mahaica Old Road where it was abandoned, leaving the employees locked inside.
After a while, sensing that their attackers had fled the scene, the stranded employees freed themselves by prizing out a side wall of the tray, and raised an alarm.
Authentic police arrived on the scene shortly after, but by then, the bogus ones had vanished.
Yesterday’s incident will certainly add to the insecurity of citizens in their dealings with the security forces.
It occurred exactly one week after three Guyana Defence Force Coast Guardsmen abducted Bartica resident Dweive Kant Ramdass and relieved him of $17M before dumping him into the Essequibo River.
Ramdass’s body was recovered on Saturday last, a few hundred yards from where it was dumped.
