– passengers left stranded
The hunt is still on for an airline Travel Service manager who disappeared with millions of dollars in cash leaving several passengers stranded both in Guyana and overseas.
The manager was reportedly last seen at work last week, and the money he has reportedly stolen represents deposits for airline tickets.
Kaieteur News understands that the travel agency only realised that the money was missing early this week when customers called to confirm their tickets.
A check of the system revealed that the money for scores of tickets booked since July cannot be accounted for.
At least one agent told this newspaper that more than 20 of his customers have been affected and at a price of US$900 per ticket, the amount missing could run into millions of Guyana dollars.
One customer who contacted this newspaper on Tuesday said that his daughter was left stranded in Toronto, Canada, since her return ticket had been reportedly cancelled.
The customer said that he had purchased a return ticket to Canada for his daughter and had thought that everything was okay since he had been doing business with the ravel agency for quite some time.
However, his daughter contacted him with the sad news that she was stranded and this caused alarm bells. He contacted the agency and his fears were confirmed.
But there was more to come. According to the customer, he had also purchased two tickets to the USA in July, for him and his wife to travel on September 8, and his daughter’s experience caused him to make further enquiries.
He learnt that his two tickets had also been cancelled, without any proper explanation.
“The girl who does the billing told me that the manager has not been seen for the past four days, despite efforts made to contact him. I even tried myself to contact him but could not,” the bewildered customer told Kaieteur News.
This newspaper was told that after booking tickets for customers, the money is handed over to the manager, whose responsibility it is to ensure that it is deposited for payment to the respective airline. According to a source, the matter was reported to the police.
The source said that there have been reports that the manager has indicated that he would repay the money but there have been no developments in that regard as yet.
