Dear Editor
As I was perusing the sports news online and I came across an article by Rawle Welch titled “As plain as that” and would like to add a comment if I may.
His statement with regards “apart from isolated outstanding performances by a few individuals, the National Junior Squash Team and senior Rugby squads” etc., is incorrect. The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation’s Representative National Team for this year has been simply superlative in their achievements to date.
1. IPF/NAPF 2009 Caribbean Championships saw Guyana gaining three (3) gold medals (Randolph Morgan 181lb open class, John Edwards 275lb open and Masters M1 class.
2. IPF / NAPF 2009 Regional Championships saw Guyana with Four (4) gold medals (Mervyn Moses 165lb open class, Randolph Morgan 181lb open class, John Edwards 275lb open and Masters classes)
3. IPF/NAPF/FESUPO 2009 Pan American Championships (held every two years) saw Guyana gaining Three Gold and one silver at this level. (Kindly note that the Pan American Championships are ranked second only to the World Championships) Again the gold medallists were Morgan and Edwards, with Moses copping the silver.
4. As an added bonus, personal achievements by Edwards being the Regional Record Holder in his masters class and Morgan, who also copped the prestigious title of Best Tournament lifter in the Caribbean Championships.
Three internationally recognised and rated Champions in one calendar year, Mr. Welch. Let us give praise to these athletes of one of the premier yet lesser known strength sports in Guyana whom have proudly kept the Golden Arrow Head flying. I personally never tire of the rush I get when all eyes of all the audience / competitors are on the Golden Arrow Head as the National Anthem is played.
The year 2010 will see Guyana Hosting the IPF / NAPF Caribbean Championships for the first time ever. Team Guyana will be showcasing the best with a 15 member squad against lifters from twenty-three countries affiliated to the NAPF.
The Crucial support of the Media will certainly be a factor towards the success of event.
