The Guyana National Rifle Association (FNRA) shot off their annual Queensway Cup match, now in its 4th year, at the Timehri Ranges on Sunday last.
The match, held in three stages saw teams drawn from the GNRA, the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Presidential Guard Unit and Bank of Guyana Security Department competing for top honours in the typical Timehri weather of blazing sunshine and interludes of pouring rain.
However the varying weather conditions did not dampen the spirits of the competitors as they strove to prove their skills in terms of speed and accuracy for top gun honours.
In stage one of three, which was a timed precision shoot competitors had 15 seconds to fire five rounds, change the magazine and fire five more rounds at an FBI bottle target at a distance of 15 meters.
This test of accuracy and magazine change skill proved challenging, especially due to the time factor, for many of the competitors and at the end of this stage, GNRA’s Ryan McKinnon proved to be the most accurate on show with a score of 95 and 1 bull out of a possible 100 points and 10 bulls. Next was Lawrence Layne with 83 points followed by Guy Nurse of the GPF one point back with 82 points.
Stage 2 was contested with an obstacle course which tested the ability of the competitors to shoot from kneeling, standing and prone positions.
The score for this stage was done by calculating the hit factor which is the total score for the stage divided by the time taken to complete the stage. Competitors who shot and moved fast and had good scoring hits on their targets stood the chance of having a higher hit factor and a high score as against those who had good hits but slower timing in the stage.
This stage proved to be exciting and entertaining as the shooters tried their very best to showcase their skill at arms. At the end Ryan McKinnon, who shot with immense accuracy and speed, proved that his first stage win was no fluke by taking the top spot with a hit factor of 2.4 followed by another GNRA shooter Lavendra Luckiram with a hit factor of 2.1 and Lancedale Withrite of the GPF with a hit factor of 1.9.
Stage three was the falling plates shoot and competitors were paired off in a draw to compete against each other to ascertain who could draw from holster and shoot down three poppers fastest having loaded four rounds in their firearms.
This stage was easily the most entertaining and thrilling one with everyone present, urging on their favorite shooter. Many of the top shooters in the match so far were eliminated early in the fast paced action and at the end of it all, after the gun smoke had cleared and the dust settled, crowd favorite Murtland ‘R.O’ Smith emerged as the fastest gun on show with a well earned first place followed closely by Yamadesh Tularam of the Presidential Guard Unit and Guy Nurse of the GPF.
At the end of Stage 1 and 2, the GNRA team of Lawrence Layne, Gordon Richard and Lavendra Luckiram emerged as the top team with a total of 546 points followed by another GNRA team made up of Johan DaSilva, Ryan McKinnon and Murtland Smith with a total of 494.9 points. Third was the President Guard team of Anatoly Moti, Yamadesh Tularam and Armanauth Rabindranauth with 471.6 points.
Honourable mention was made of the Guyana Police Force team comprising of Patrick Todd, Lancedale Withrite and Guy Nurse who occupied 4th place with 468.2 points. They had a high amount of points during Stage 2 due to accurate shooting but their timing during the third stage was slow which resulted in them having a lower hit factor which negatively affected their overall points standing.
Overall individual performance honours from the two stages went to Ryan McKinnon with a spectacular performance that saw him emerging as the top gun for the shoot with a score of 245 points followed by Lavendra Luckiram with 204.7 points and Lancedale Withrite of the GPF in third with 188.2 points.
Range officers and scorers for the day’s events were ASP Linden Alves of the GPF along with Dale Hing, Lance Khan and Joseph Chin of the GNRA. Their tireless efforts ensured that the day’s shooting events were conducted safely and incident free.
The GNRA wishes to thank the organisations who attended for their participation which contributed to making the event a resounding success.
