Aiming to strengthen foundation of youths
By Franklin Wilson
Former England and Guyanese cricketer, Monty Lynch has started a 3-day clinic at the National Gymnasium where he intends to impart and strengthen the basics of the sport into a young group of players.
Lynch, who hailed originally from Plaisance on the East Coast of Demerara, but resides on the West Coast of Demerara when in Guyana, said he will be focusing on building balance, speed movements, building their confidence and abilities during the three days of the clinic.
“I am aiming to have them understand and appreciate the levels they have to get to and can get to with the right tuition.”
“I believe we have to start from grassroots again and the powers that be should have such a system that you start from under-9’s upwards and get sponsors and people like me involved. You should not have people like me coming here five months of the year spending time doing nothing, utilise our knowledge.”
Lynch, who resides in England, said he has about 500 kids who pass through him each year from January to August in the UK. He said he has been home for the past two years, but has not been able to get going with his coaching so he decided to go it on his own.
“I hope that people would take up the offer, yes there is a fee to it, but it’s nowhere near what I earn in the UK, I’m doing it off my own back to help the kids in the country – it’s as simple as that. In the future, we’re going to be doing some work on Saturdays and Sundays – two hour sessions for different age groups consisting of 12 each so it’s not a mercenary thing, I can work with 20 or 30, but then you don’t get the quality you should derive.”
Much of the drills the youngsters will experience Lynch said would be based on movement, balance, speed of thought, speed of movement, having confidence in their ability, learning the art of captaincy, wicket keeping, batting and bowling.
“When they come out, they come out different people and their attitude towards the sport is different.”
The former right handed batsman who bowled medium pace and off break and who is also the owner of Sports Equipment Company Mal skills stressed that more emphasis would be placed on ability and how they could use it more as well as how they [players] accept failure.
“You know, if you do something wrong how you accept it. They are not going to be rebuked and do 20 pushups, if they do something wrong, sports have changed. All in all, I’m hoping that the kids themselves would go and spread the word in terms of what they have been doing because it is something different as you can see on their faces, they are learning things here and their concentration levels have been pushed, but at the same time, they are enjoying themselves.”
Lynch disclosed that he recently completed his Level II Coaching Certificate after obtaining his Level I some 15 years ago and will be going for Level III early in the new year, before moving on to the advanced level.
“A lot of people know my ability in the UK and I also did work in Australia and run Argentina for six years or so, so everybody knows what I’m capable of doing. I also write programmes for a lot of people, schools and universities for their staff to undertake with their pupils.”
