Guyana’s local motor racing champion Andrew King will spearhead a strong contingent to Barbados to participate in the second leg of the Caribbean Series which takes place at Bushy Park on Sunday.
King, who pilots a Mazda RX 7 and who recently dominated the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club Meeting at the South Dakota Circuit, will be accompanied by Kevin Jeffrey in a Mitsubishi Evolution VIII, Gavin Gayadin, who drives a BMW E318I and Gavin Gouveia in a turbocharged Toyota Starlet.
The Guyanese champ and Jeffrey will campaign in the Group 4 category and will have to be at their level best to topple current leader David Summerbell of Jamaica, who heads the points standing with 30 followed by defending champion Stuart Maloney of Barbados on 22 and his brother Mark on 14.
From reports, Summerbell in a Mitsubishi Evolution VIII has looked invincible, but with the Maloneys’ enjoying home advantage and King and Jeffrey eager to score points ahead of the final Meeting set for Guyana, he will be hard pressed to maintain his supremacy.
Meanwhile, two riders including local champion Stephen ‘Valentino Rossi’ Vieira and Maurice Menezes will throw down the gauntlet in the Super Bikes Series against the Bajans and Jamaicans in what could be a very interesting affair.
Vieira, who rides a Yamaha R6, had told Kaieteur Sport at the last local Meeting that he was just using the event to warm-up for the Barbados challenge should feature in the races, judging from his performance recently.
A large contingent of Guyanese fans along with the media will be present at the Barbados event which is expected to boost its sports tourism programme.
