The 2009 Poonai’s Pharmacy Under-13, Inter-Zone Cricket competition continued on Monday with the second semi-final played at the Blairmont Ground. Led by opening pacer Niall Smith, the son of former Guyana Senior Team coach Albert Smith, New Amsterdam/Canje bowled out West Berbice for a paltry 56 and they took the crucial first innings points thanks mainly to a sparkling half century from Leon Andrews, the grandson of the late Berbice all rounder Vincent Andrews.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, West Berbice were immediately in trouble when two wickets fell without a run on board. Pacers Smith and Ramesh Seenarine were the two successful bowlers. The introduction of off spin caused even more problems and with Leon Andrews picking up two and Kierre Henry one as West Berbice slipped to 17 for 5.
Derick Lalsa Jnr and Grisean Grant staged a mini recovery but after they had added 29, Smith returned and picked up three more crucial wickets. Off spinner Quacy Mickle sent back the last two batsmen reducing the West Berbicians to an embarrassing 56 all out in their first innings. Lalsa topped scored with 35 while Grant lashed 13. In total eight batsmen failed to get off the mark.
Bowling for New Amsterdam/Canje Niall Smith took 4 for 9 from 7.3 overs while Leon Andrews took 2 for 4 from 8 overs. Quacy Mickle polished off with 2 for 6 from 3 overs.
When New Amsterdam/Canje responded, their opening batsman Leon Andrews and Gary Millington conspired to ease their team past the first inning target and continued to post 80 for the first wicket before Millington was caught bowled by off spinner Derick Lalsa (jnr) for a patient 15. Fifteen runs later, Lalsa also removed Leon Andrews, bowled for a well made 50 (2×4) when the score was on 95 for 2.
Meanwhile the Marlon Shepherd was batting steadily and added 16 for the 3rd wicket with Simian Hetmyer (3). He also featured in a 4th wicket stand with Quacy Mickle (9) before he was eventually caught off the bowling of off spinner Harrykish Bissoondyal for 33.
New Amsterdam/Canje closed their first innings at 143 for 5 after which the game was called off.
Derick Lalsa Jnr was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 35 from 22 Overs.
New Amsterdam/Canje will now clash with Upper Corentyne in the finals set for Friday at the Rose Hall Town Ground.
Meanwhile the play-off for the third place between West Berbice and Lower Corentyne is scheduled for this morning at the Rose Hall Town Ground.
