As relatives of 27-year-old Kunja ‘Dave’ Beharry await an official word from the Prison authorities about his death, they are refuting claims that the man was mentally ill.
Speaking to this newspaper, one relative was adamant that Beharry never had any notable illness, moreso any mental illness.
“Dat boy never sick before and he ain’t no mad man, so I ain’t know wha dem sayin’…he never trip out or nothing like dat,” the relatives said.
Meanwhile, the relatives said they are still awaiting a post mortem examination since none was done today as they were expecting.
They said they were informed by a police rank who called their home yesterday that the post mortem will be performed on Wednesday.
Beharry of Good Hope, Mahaica, was found dead in his cell at the Georgetown Prisons on Friday last, after being remanded the previous day for simple larceny.
The police statement noted that about 21:00 hours on Thursday last (August 20) Beharry was behaving abnormally in his cell located in the Social Block, when he was attacked by two other inmates and sustained injuries.
To date, the Guyana Prison Service has not issued a statement nor commented on the incident independently.
Only the Ministry of Home Affairs has so far issued a statement airing concern over the incident.
