A man accused of robbing the owners of a Linden restaurant last week was yesterday remanded to prison when he appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Demston La Fleur is accused of having a .22 revolver in his possession on August 20. It was also alleged that on the same date he robbed Dick’s Chinese Restaurant, the property of Kum Puin Chuien, of $500,000.
La Fleur, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution stated that on the day in question, the police responded to a call that there was a robbery, where the defendant had been caught by public-spirited persons.
He was handed over to the police and took them to a clump of bushes where the weapon was discovered.
He was later arrested and charged. When given a chance, the accused told the court that he was beaten by the police and he never took them to look for any weapon.
He was nevertheless remanded to prison and is expected to make another court appearance on August 31.
The matter was transferred to the Christianburg Magistrate’s Court.
Public-spirited citizens had turned the tables on three bandits who carted off $500,000 from Dick’s Chinese Restaurant in Republic Avenue, Linden last week.
One of the bandits, who was later identified as La Fleur, was soundly beaten while trying to escape, while the others surrendered to police after hiding in a nearby yard.
According to reports, restaurant owner Kum Puin Chuien, 36, and his wife closed the business just before midnight on Wednesday, but unknown to them, one of the robbers had secreted himself in the restaurant’s washroom earlier in the night.
After the man had let in his accomplices, the trio reportedly forced the couple to hand over cash and fled. However, the couple raised an alarm and several residents emerged from their homes and managed to nab one of the fleeing men, while the other two gave themselves up.
