The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) commenced the upgrade and frequency conversion of its network – from 50 Hz to 60 Hz – in Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, last Sunday. The area along George Street, Henry Street, Smyth Street, Cross Street and Leopold Street will also be converted. Further, Queenstown, Alberttown and Bourda , bordered by Light Street, Lamaha Street, Oronoque Street and North Road, will also be converted from 50 Hz to 60 Hz.
Customers in Queenstown and Alberttown’s power supply will be switched on Sunday, September 6. In addition, the power supply for those in Bourda will be changed from 50 Hz to 60 Hz on Sunday, September 20.
The distribution networks in those areas were constructed over forty (40) years ago and operate at 4,160V (50 Hz) with limited capacity. Therefore, the conversion will significantly improve the network capacity, thus improving the quality of supply.
The new conversion from the 50 Hz to the 60 Hz will affect all appliances with the operation of a 50 Hz motor to the extent that failure can occur. As a result, all 50 Hz fans, water pumps, water systems, music systems (except with DC drives), fluorescent lamps, mercury vapour lamps and such like will have to be converted. On the other hand, electrical equipment with dual frequency, having both 50/60Hz capacity, would not be affected. This new conversion will operate at 13,800V (60 Hz) and as mentioned earlier, will provide improved service to customers.
