Community outreach activities will be among the important features which will be engaged next month as part of the observance of Education Month.
According to Minister within the Education Ministry, Dr Desrey Fox, the innovative initiative which was introduced as part of last year’s observance will be retained this year as one of the more important activities.
Last year, the outreach saw officials of the Ministry engaging meaningful discussions with parents of students and other members of the public about the programmes and policies of the entity.
The fora were not without those with criticisms and compliments as they were characteristic of interactive sessions and therefore signalled that the involvement of the public was crucial to the improvement of the education sector.
And among the issues addressed at the community outreach activities was the training of teachers with a view of ensuring that quality teachers will be available to deliver quality education to the children in public schools.
It was Minister Fox who disclosed last year, while at a forum at the South Ruimveldt Secondary School, that every effort will be made to ensure that the delivery of education be done in an equitable manner.
Dr Fox had emphasised that there should never be a difference in the delivery process whereby one school could be considered better than the other.
It was against this very background that measures were streamlined to phase out Community High Schools which are often considered lower level schools, Dr Fox asserted.
And in order to ensure that the right attitude is portrayed by students, the Minister said that moral education is very much required in schools. It was for this reason that a task force headed by her was slated to be set up in order to work towards preparing a document to define how proper moral education could be delivered in schools.
However, the Minister noted that the school system is still tasked with addressing several other issues, among them some ills of the society that are beyond the skills of teachers and even welfare officers.
As a result, it is the view of the Minister that schools must collaborate with parents in order to produce students with rounded personalities who could be leaders of the nation.
For this reason, Minister Fox had disclosed that the Ministry has been collaborating with the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) to train parents to prepare children for school even before they reach school age.
It is anticipated that the community outreach activities this year will once again attract the attention and interaction of members.
Under the theme ‘School Attendance and Punctuality: Keys to Education Success’ Education Month will kick off on September 1 with the representation of a message from Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh.
On the eighth day of the month, International Literacy Day will be observed with activities in schools in all education districts and the launching of a UNICEF Publication at the National Centre for Education Research Development (NCERD).
The Education Month activities will also be inclusive of an awareness walk – to encourage children/teachers to attend school regularly and punctually – festivals of choirs, JOF Haynes debating competitions and a health fair.
The culmination of Education Month will pave the way for the observance of International Teachers Day on October 5, 2009 and the National Awards Ceremonies on October 7, 2009.
Meanwhile, General Secretary of the Guyana Teachers Union, Ms Corretta McDonald, is urging that all teachers be a part of the activities plan and also to encourage parents to send their children out to benefit from the proposed activities.
