Barrow’s Restaurant and Lounge, on Manni Street, Linden on Saturday evening last held their fifth bursary awards and dinner, in honour of the outstanding performers in Region 10 at the last National Grade Six Assessment.
Ten children, who topped the region, received a plaque each, a congratulation card and cash, compliments of the proprietor of the business, Dunstan Barrow.
The recipients were Tianna Blair and Oswald Haynes, who secured the highest marks in region ten, with 544 marks each, followed by Asheeka John (541), Emanuel Gilkes and Dorielle Retemyer (538), Naomi Allsop (523), Ronacia Forde (520), Jolanie Ramkisson (518), Kasling Kerstin (507), Oshana Bruce (499) and Constance Park (474).
All the students were accompanied by one or both parents, and in some cases a Teacher.
Dunstan Barrow in his opening remarks declared, “It’s a pleasure and honour to have you all here this evening. I believe that if you live in a community and don’t give back, something is wrong with you. So we try to give back in our own small way, by recognising and honouring the students that have done well at the National Grade Six Exams.”
Barrow exhorted the students to apply the same hard work and tenacity as they go through secondary school, while pointing out that it will even become imperative for them to work harder than they had done at the primary level.
He urged them to strive to become scientists and engineers, and even aspire to be the president.
Barrow also called on parents to continue supporting their children.
It was pointed out that when the bursary awards started, only children in Linden were eligible, however, other communities such as Aroaima and Mabura were later included. The Linden businessman and his son Dustanni, made a commitment to include even more communities within Region Ten as time goes by.
Parents of the children and a representative from the Ministry of Education, along with a few teachers, reiterated what Barrow said, with the Education official pointing out that Barrow had exemplified what it meant to be a good corporate citizen.
She commended the businessman for his generosity towards the students, while encouraging the parents to do everything in their power to ensure the success of their children.
The children were advised to make a goal and to stick to it.
All the recipients and a few parents thanked and congratulated Barrow for his kind gesture.
It was pointed out by one of the teachers who graced the occasion, that when Barrow decided to quit throwing parties to celebrate his birthday more than five years ago, and instead to give bursaries to creditable performers at the National Grade Six Assessment, “it was a very good idea”, and one worthy of emulation by other entrepreneurs in Linden.
Students, Parents and other special invitees, who graced the occasion, were treated to a sumptuous dinner, and serenaded by the now quite famous GT&T Cellink Jingle winner, Malika Boyd, who as usual outdid herself with two electrifying performances. (Enid Joaquin)
