Dear Editor,
The role of our journalism has a direct effect on events on Election Day. As such, our journalism must be fair, not only sometimes but all the time. This includes the reportage from New York courtrooms.
Kaieteur News (KN) must be applauded for offering fair journalism regarding the Khan-Simel trials. I can substantiate this statement.
Only Kaieteur News has shown the courage, for example, to report all names called, equally. Other papers either did no reportage or “duck” certain names.
On August 20, I read a report in another paper which told the public that Mr. Robert Simels testified to many things, e.g., that Mr. Roger Khan got government assistance, “to have the intercept equipment and guns to fight the Buxton gang known as the ‘Taliban’.”
However, that particular paper omitted the fact that Mr. Simels also told the court that army officers organised the removal of murdered and decapitated sugarcane workers from Buxton front to the backlands.
It is unclear why certain papers are bent on making the news, instead of reporting the news. This is extremely dangerous, because voters can see bias and may very well respond to it accordingly on Elections Day.
This bias coverage is not new. I did an entire article in 2006 about it, but clearly in vain. In 2006, one paper even translated local Creole dialect for local Guyanese.
Who does such a thing? But this was done so that the paper could distort what was actually said, thereby protecting the speaker.
Distortion is happening again. Certain facts are mentioned, and others are omitted; certain names are repeated and others willfully erased.
Bringing “breaking news” is not important as bringing clean news. Bringing the news “first” is not important as bringing all the news relevant to make it complete.
