In an effort to make the roads in their community safer, members of the Enterprise Road Safety Group on the East Coast of Demerara have erected several speed humps to curtail reckless driving.
With schools re-opening in a week’s time, the venture could not have come at a better time.
In addition to the speed humps, the group also repainted several road signs, most of which are located in close proximity to the Enterprise Primary School.
Residents of the community were so appreciative of the initiative that those who lived on roads that are devoid of the speed humps were clamouring for them.
“We started this week and when we are done with this area we will move on to other areas,” said Chandrapaul Persaud, President of the group.
He informed that the speed humps were facilitated through a donation from the Enterprise Support Group New York Inc. in addition to contributions from members of the community’s road safety group.
The Enterprise Road Safety Group is one of the most vibrant road safety groups in the country and has even received commendation from the Traffic Chief for the work it has been doing over the years.
“The people of Enterprise will know that the roads in the community will be safe for their children. We are calling on the motorists to pay attention to the humps and exercise caution when traveling through the village,” Persaud told this newspaper in an invited comment.
He noted that the country has already lost a lot of lives as a result of road accidents and his group is determined to make a difference in whatever way it can.
“As school will be re-opening, we cannot afford the loss of another schoolchild,” Persaud declared.
He welcomed the new breathalyzer law, since he is aware that most of the accidents are caused by motorists who are under the influence of alcohol.
He also called on the police as well as residents to be more vigilant since there also appears to be an increase of drag racing, which is many cases end catastrophically.
In addition, he believes that there is greater need to enforce the new cell phone law.
The president of the Enterprise Road Safety group praised the police on the East Coast of Demerara for the assistance they have been rendering to his group, singling out Traffic Officer, Inspector Moore for special mention.
Persaud, who is also the Assistant Secretary of the National Road Safety Council, and a member of the Road Safety Planning Committee, believes that more groups should be established in other communities so that the reliance on the national body and the Police Traffic Department will be reduced.
“I am in the road safety business for the past 20 years so I know exactly what road safety is. With other groups combined, we can make the villages safer and we can make much more difference with regards to the lives we are losing on the roads.”
