Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica clash this morning at the Georgetown Cricket Club Ground in a match that nets the winner the Regional Women’s 50-overs cricket title.
Jamaica would be very upbeat after carting off the spoils in all of the major tournaments played so far for the year.
Yesterday morning Trinidad and Tobago displayed immense grit and determination to outplay Barbados in their semi-final encounter against Barbados at the Demerara Cricket Club Ground and book a place in today’s finals against the Jamaicans.
Britney Cooper rose to the occasion and stroked an enterprising half century to lead Trinidad to a hard fought victory. She was later adjudged player of the match.
Barbados won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch that offered even bounce and good for batting. Michelle Ellis and Shaquana Quintyn opened Barbados innings but were soon separated after Kirbyina Alexander, bowling medium pace in the second over, deceived Ellis with a well pitched up ball that crashed into her stumps with merely 3 runs on the board. Alexander also removed Keila Elliott for a duck and had Tiffany Thorpe caught by substitute Michelle Sandy for a single to finish with figures of 9.4 overs, one maiden, 31 for 3.
Shaquana Quintyn also showed some resistance with the bat but was eventually run out while attempting a tight single. She reached the boundary thrice in an entertaining 31. Pamela Lavine top scored with a plucky 45 laced with 3 boundaries but eventually perished, caught Devika Singh bowled Anisa Mohammed.
Stacy Ann King also rose to the occasion, lashing 2 fours and 3 mighty sixes to register 39 lofty runs before she went, caught by Britney Cooper off the bowling of Stacy Ann King. With the other batters registering insignificant totals, the Bajans were eventually dismissed for 178. Stacy Ann King supported Alexander with figures of 6 overs, taking 3 wickets for 28 runs while Aneisa Mohammed send down 10 overs and conceded 23 runs for 2 scalps.
In response, Devika Singh and Amanda Samaroo posted 33 runs for the first Trinidadian wicket before Singh stroked the ball through covers and took off for a single. Samaroo hesitated a fraction of a second, which in the end proved costly as she was sent back, run out for 11. Eight runs later Singh attempted a drive off Pamela Lavine but only succeeded in dragging the ball back onto her stumps at 38-2. Tiffany Thorpe then trapped Gaitri Seetahal making way for Stacy Ann King who joined Cooper. She spent 45 minutes compiling an entertaining 24 runs, including a solitary boundary, before she was sent back, bowled Shaquane Quintyne (93-4).
With Trinidad needing 85 runs from 24 overs, the Trinidad captain, Merissa Aguilleira walked out, contributed 5 runs and was then caught by Shakera Selman. Cooper was then on 30 and the score 103-5 with the Trinidadians still needing 75 more to reach the finals. The situation became dicey when Alexander was bowled by Charlene Taitt after adding just one more to the total (104-6).
Alecia Mohammed then strolled out and together with Cooper started the repair job. Cooper reached her half century after 118 minutes at the crease. She reached the boundary twice. She departed 8 runs later while attempting to push the total.
When she departed Trinidad still needed 25 runs from 45 deliveries with three wickets intact.
More drama followed after Alisha Mohammed was found short of her crease attempting a sharp single. Whitney Cudjoe then drove Selman through extra cover for a double, moments before that bowler got her revenge with a straight delivery that shattered Cudjoe’s stumps once again opening the match.
Jareena Polooksingh entered and was required to survive at least three balls or score the required 2 runs. She duly formalized things with a slashing shot to the boundary that sent the Trinidadians into wild ecstasy. Shaquana Quintyne was the most successful Barbadian bowler with figures of 10 overs, no maidens, 32-2. Today’s match promises similar excitement.
Scores: Barbados 178; Trinidad 179-8.
