Dear Editor,
I know it must have pained to sit and write the editorial caption, “Where are our protectors? I would like to know, and many would also need to know if Guyana is a country gone out of control. Where are the laws? Where are the protectors?
It is a very sad day in the history of the security forces in Guyana. I could not imagine how law enforcement officers could so foolishly get involved in such a horrible act.
As I read the facts, it appears that the officers had knowledge and had planned the attack. It makes no sense for officers to take a person off the speed boat in the presence of witnesses, rob him and then kill him. This is totally insensible.
The young man’s body has since been found. The last persons seen with him were the three coast guards. One has since confessed the victim was strangled and thrown over board.
My question is, who supervise the personnel and who inspect their boats? As a former police officer now security expert, I am appalled at the number of elementary mistakes that the security forces are making when it comes to supervision.
Some higher rank must be held accountable in order that some form of sanity is restored. Remember the missing guns from the army; money and clothing stolen from police headquarters.
I now turn my attention to the boat mishap near Hogg Island. I will not shed any blame on the police since what they were investigating appears at the time to be a mishap.
However, with the events on the Essequibo River, the police will have to refocus their investigation from being a mishap to one of murder. They have a duty to keep the public informed of what is happening. They should not be operating like if they are above the law.
How can a boat be damage and be repaired and I am just speculating that no one asked a question as to “how this boat was damage?” I am going on what persons who are around Parika are saying that, the boat was missing for about three days.
We must find out who give the authorisation for the boat to be painted; secondly, if a report was submitted about the damaged boat; thirdly, the cost of repairs and finally if higher ranks were made aware.
To my dismay young police officers conducting road blocks to search for the missing money were successful and they should be congratulated, but they took it upon themselves to steal some of the money.
It is time citizens and authorities let those responsible for this crime, know that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated. Personnel in the security forces are placed there to protect and serve.
