Sunburst Camptown rebounded in style to take full points from Pele with a 2-1 win in Friday evening’s feature when the Cellink Premier League continued at the Tucville Community ground.
Camptown’s win places them at the top of the point’s standings on 24 along with defending champion’s Alpha United while Pele remains on 7.
Friday evening’s opening match-up saw the home team Fruta Conquerors also erasing a 1-0 deficit to haul past Flamingo 3-1 in the final 20 minutes of their encounter. Conquerors now move to 13 points and 4th in the standing’s with Flamingo still bringing up the rear on 2.
The main event was a highly physical affair as both teams sought to take control of proceedings but it was Pele who came closest to taking the lead but poor finishing put paid to their efforts. Camptown too created a few chances of their own in the see saw battle in the opening 70 minutes.
Fans on both sides of the divide were beginning to get restless with no goals coming their way but then Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant put Pele ahead in the 71st minute. Grant capitalized on some loose play by Camptown’s right back Leon Muir who’s intended fake on the ball allowed Pele the access in the attacking third.
The squared ball into the box created some confusion among Camptown’s defence which had to race back to cover; Grant capitalising on their lapse to put his team ahead. But their {Pele} celebrations were short-lived.
On the next run down after play was restarted, Troy ‘Bugs’ Prescod, the most experienced player in the Camptown line up, took the ball down to the line in Pele’s attacking third before nicely squaring to Kester Alleyne at the top of the six yard box and with a first time right foot volley, Alleyne had the ball dangling at the back of the nets to level the score. The game had just begun.
Neither team eased off the throttle at this stage but it was Camptown who enjoyed the better of the exchanges as yellow cards were issued at regular intervals to members of both teams by referee Mark Young.
Camptown’s Kwame La Fleur benefited from similar circumstances as Pele did when they tucked in the go ahead goal.
After another promising run down, Camptown sealed the deal through La Fleur’s goal in the 75th minute. In the remaining minutes, Camptown were skillful in slowing down the game and passing the ball around effectively, Nigel Codrington made use of his experience to full effect in this regard.
The opening game saw Flamingo, who has improved tremendously in this second round of competition, squandering a 1-0 cushion to lose the game 3-1 to Conquerors. Their lack of experience and focus at this level proved their downfall in the end.
Flamingo took the lead as early as the 29th minute through a Quacy Alleyne goal. They squandered numerous chances when they had their opponents against the ropes, mistakes which came back to haunt them dearly.
They were solid up until the 70th minute, thereafter; Conquerors took over banging in three unanswered goals in the final 23 minutes. Joylon Harry (70), Devon Forde (89) and Gavin De Costa in the 3rd minute of injury time (90+3) all inking their names on the score sheets as Conquerors sailed to victory.

Rivalry will continue this evening at the same venue when Alpha United lock horns with BK International Western Tigers in the main event, the curtain raiser bringing together the Guyana Defence Force and Georgetown Football Club.
Alpha, will be aiming to tame the Tigers who have been steadily improving and are constantly working on regaining lost ground in these ranks. Achieving a draw against the defending champions will be a good result for Western but Alpha’s potency in dispatching opposing teams so far has been without flaw.
An intriguing tussle is anticipated with Devon Millington leading the Tigers’ quest for a good result with Shawn Bishop, Andrew Murray and Quincy Madramootoo at the helm for Alpha.
Fans can also look forward to an electrifying battle between the Army and The Bourda Blues in the opening game this evening.
