The Education Sector is poised to be even more efficient with the graduation of over 400 trained teachers from the Cyril Potter College of Education last week Thursday.
And though there were many outstanding performers, Donnessa McDonald stood out with the best performance in the Georgetown Centre Secondary Programme.
She was accordingly dubbed the Best Graduating student.
The ambitious McDonald who hails from Brighton Village on the Corentyne Coast said that she was willing to give up her lifestyle in Berbice to fulfil her dream of becoming a trained teacher.
She, as a result, had to take up lodging in East La Penitence, Georgetown, to attend the Turkeyen College. She was also assigned to teach English Literature and English Language to students of grade seven and nine at the North Ruimveldt Secondary School.
Accordingly, English Language was her major at college. But it was no easy task maintaining her grades at college and keeping up with her teaching curriculum. In fact, according to McDonald, “I even wanted to give up when it was close to the end.”
And there was the lingering question confronting her and several others who had English as their major as to whether they would have been able to graduate this time around. This she said came as a result of the College losing its English teacher, Ms Elona Williams, due to some difficulties.
But it was in recognition of the predicament, McDonald said, that Williams decided to return to continue teaching English at the College, effectively relieving them of their some of their worries. Intense studying was not an option as McDonald and her colleagues recognised that they had to put in as much effort into their work as Williams was willing to offer.
She was able to complete her final semester with the support from family members, friends and other outside sources. Her second year English teacher, Ms Hazel Moses, was quite supportive.
At the graduation ceremony, McDonald was elated to learn that she was identified as a Best Graduating Student. She was duly awarded two trophies for her outstanding performance.
