The 2009 Spready’s Bakery Under-19, 50-over Cricket Competition continued recently with Albion Community Centre and Rose Hall Town Pepsi advancing to the semi-finals after they both won their respective quarter-finals matches.
In the quarter-final which was reduced to 40 overs-a-side because of rain and was played at Port Mourant, Albion Community Centre defeated Edinburgh by 152 runs.
Winning the toss and batting first, Albion Community Centre lost their two main batsmen, former Guyana Under-15 captain Harrinarine Chattergoon and Berbice Under-19 batsman Manoj Pooranauth very early to medium pacer Zaheer Hussain to be 10 for 2.
However from that point former Guyana Under-15 allrounder Sharmindra Hardyal and Sachin Dhaniram, the nephew of former Guyana and West Indies B opening batsman Sudesh Dhaniram put on 181 runs for the 3rd wicket between them to put their team in control before Hussain removed both of them, Hardyal for 116 (13 fours) and Dhaniram for 54 (3 fours). Bowling for Edinburgh Zaheer Hussain took 4 for 31 from 8 overs.
When Edinburgh began their response, they were given the start they needed by Elroy Nelson and Berbice Under-15 batsman Jamal Henry who between them put on 75 for the first wicket in just 12 overs. However the introduction of offspinner Yogeshwar Deonarine into the attack saw both of them going in quick succession and with only one other batsman getting into double figures, Edinburgh declined very rapidly to 98 all out in 21.2 overs with Elroy Nelson top scoring with 39 and Jamal Henry 25. Bowling for Albion Community Centre Yogeshwar Deonarine took 5 for 30 from 8 overs and offspinner Harrinarine Chattergoon 3 for 24 from 6.3 overs.
Over at the Blairmont Ground, Rose Hall Town Pepsi beat Achievers of Lovely Lass by 44 runs.
In the match which was reduced to 35 overs-a-side, also because of rain, Rose Hall Town Pepsi winning the toss and batting first, declined to 54 for 4 and 85 for 7 before former Berbice Under-17 Allrounder Terrence Madramootoo (54 N.O – 4 sixes and 1 four) and Berbice Under-19 cricketer Eon Hooper (34) put on a very valuable 70 runs for the 8th wicket to assist Rose Hall Town to be 179 for 9 after their 35 overs.
Bowling for Achievers offspinner Asif Khan took 3 for 29 from 7 overs and offspinner Sherwin McPherson 2 for 36 from 7 overs.
When Achievers replied, they soon found themselves at 33 for 3 before former Guyana Under-19 cricketer Keyron Fraser and Nicholson put on 39 for the 4th wicket.
However after that 3 wickets fell for just 6 runs to leave the innings in tatters at 78 for 7 in 26 overs. An eight wicket stand of 50 between Keyron Fraser and Kishun was not enough to save them and Achievers were 137 for 9 at the end of their 35 overs. Keyron Fraser top scored with 44, Raffel Estriado 27 and Jermain Nicholson 21. Bowling for Rose Hall Town Pepsi offspinner Lloydel Lewis took 2 for 23 from 7 overs.
