….if culprits found, licenses will be revoked – CMO
It seems as if persons are becoming more blatant in the disposal of medical waste in the city, as yet another set of potentially dangerous items have been found – syringes and vials with what appeared to be blood in most of them.
Yesterday, an alert citizen informed Kaieteur News that a number of items, which appeared to be syringes, were dumped in proximity to Middle and Quamina Streets.
When this newspaper arrived at the location, it was observed that the items dominating the dump were vials along with a few syringes.
Also, a number of passersby said that the items were seen there since Monday last and apparently there were larger amounts of it in a box, which could no longer be found at the site. This is the third such discovery in the city in recent weeks. In the first instance, syringes were found at Lamaha & Camp Streets, while another set was found at Middle and Thomas Streets, in proximity to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
However, the GPHC has since denied doing such an unethical act.
Following the discovery, the Ministry of Health decided to launch an investigation.
This investigative team is being headed by Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr Shamdeo Persaud, who informed Kaieteur News yesterday that the Health Ministry is working in collaboration with the Mayor and City Council in the removal of these items.
Dr. Persaud was made aware of the additional set of syringes and vials found yesterday, and as such immediate action was taken by the Ministry in the proper disposal of it.
According to Dr. Persaud, if the act is found to be perpetrated by private health institutions, then their license to operate a medical facility will be revoked with immediate effect.
The CMO explained that a lot of money has been invested in supplying all health institutions with proper disposal boxes for these items, as there is also an arrangement with the Mayor and City Council to collect and dispose the items.
