The University of Guyana (UG) has re-opened its online registration process for students who wish to attend the institution. This announcement was made at a press conference by Registrar, Vincent Alexander, at the campus’ Education Lecture Theatre yesterday.
Four months ago, UG had announced the introduction of an electronic students’ records management system and the start of online applications for its prospective students. That activity for 2009 ostensibly came to an end on July 30.
According to Alexander, the system has been re-opened to accept applications for the faculties/schools and specific programmes, which include, Agriculture and Forestry, Education and Humanities, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Technology; Sociology, Communication Studies, Economics, Nursing, Environmental Health, Dentistry, Post Graduate Diplomas in International Relations and Developmental Studies, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, the Masters in Forestry Biology; and the Berbice Campus.
The registrar noted that the facility will be accessible for a period of two weeks from August 24 to September 4, 2009.
“It should be noted that during this period only online applications will be entertained and those persons who do not have access to private or public internet services can access such services at the Turkeyen and Berbice Campuses of the University. It must however be emphasised that when the online system shuts down on September 4, 2009 there will be no further interface, direct or internet for the submission of applications. All prospective applicants must apply by September 04, 2009,” Alexander told media operatives.
He added that the University is satisfied that the new system has worked satisfactorily since its introduction and they have advanced the system to its next logical stage.
He explained that on August 5, 2009, the University announced the commencement of online registration for its new and first-year students.
According to Alexander, online registration for continuing students will commence on September 7, 2009 as some of them have already accessed the facility.
“All of those who have applied, to date, are therefore advised that they should continue to track their applications online and as soon as their status is admit, they should proceed to register online, pay their fees at the Bank and complete registration by visiting the Admissions Division at the Turkeyen or Berbice Campus. Registration will only be completed after they uplift Identification Cards from the Admissions Division.”
He noted that for students who will be accessing loans, the loan forms are available on the University’s website.
The University also announced that classes at the institution will commence on October 5 with the exception of Law.
Law’s first-year classes will commence on September 7 and classes for second and third-year law students will commence on September 21.
“The introduction of electronic students’ records management is a work in progress and will progressively during the 2009/2010 academic year, unveil more features; provide more services; and ultimately embrace ever facet of student life.”
