Four matches slated for Scotts School ground from 10:00hrs
The Scotts School ground in the Ancient County of Berbice will come alive today as the first round of the Business School Football League kicks off with four matches.
Organised by the Berbice Football association (BFA), competition will get underway from 10:00hrs with Scottsburg United clashing with Rosignol United. Facing off at noon will be Hearts of Oak of New Amsterdam and Mahaicony United to be followed by a clash between Barzilla of Blairmont and Real Union from 14:00hrs.
Climaxing the day’s action will be the collision between arch rivals New Amsterdam United and Monedderlust. Quarter-final rivalry will be played next Saturday.
Apart from the attractive trophies and medals at stake for the three top teams, the most disciplined player of the competition will be rewarded with a scholarship to attend the Business School.
Director of The Business School Mr. James Bovell said he believes that sports must be a part of the education process.
Bovell, a Berbician and ardent football supporter, noted that the tournament is all in an effort to give back to the community as well as to help to promote the development of sports in a way that will be of benefit to the youths of Berbice. “This will also keep them meaningfully occupied and away from the many negative influences plaguing our society, among them, drugs, alcohol and crime.”
Speaking on behalf of the BFA, Joseph Simon said that his entity gratefully acknowledges this tournament as being both a timely and a worthwhile contribution towards enhancing the development of the youths in football, especially at this juncture.
Among the young players on show will be former national under-16 players Kevin McCalmon and Garson Baker, national under-15 players Mohamed Ali and Sherwin Lewis just back from a tour of Suriname where Lewis was Guyana’s top scorer.
