The 16th Edition of the William France Fitness Walk is set for tomorrow starting at 6:00am from Two Brothers Gas Station to end at Front View Shop at Mocha Road head.
The event has attracted participants from as far as Berbice and Essequibo and it is open to all interested walkers, whether as part of the competition or to keep fit.
Prizes, inclusive of trophies and other incentives along with certificates, will be awarded to the top finishers in several categories. Those categories include male and female in the Open department, persons with disability, Over-50, the oldest and youngest persons will also be rewarded.
Some 60 youths from the Mocha Seventh Day Adventist Pathfinders are down to take part in support of Frances’ effort. Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony and Director of Sport Neil Kumar are also down to be apart of the activity.
Meanwhile, France has thrown out a challenge to leading race walker Rudolph Mitchell, stating that he has two persons capable of beating the national champion, who has chalked up his 97th win on the way to the coveted century mark.
France noted that Richard Lewis and Michael Charles have the capability, while a third person, George Union, is also keen to test Mitchell.
An Employee of the GRA Customs Department (Mr. Dawson) has been challenging leg amputees and France is of the view that two of his colleagues, Dennis Burns and Andre Richards are more than able to answer that challenge.
Anola Peters will also be in the reckoning in the female division, while Sportswoman Alika Morgan will be a guest on the event.
Several sponsors have come forward to assist in sponsorship for Sunday’s activity. Among them – Princess International Hotel (formerly Buddy’s), Alpha Hotel, Ramchand, Kenrick and Yassin’s Auto Sales, GT&T, GEB, Baja Health Movement, Gizmos and Gadgets, the Red Cross, Dr. Bowman, Drummer Tyre Shop, Car Care, Woodpecker products, Nigel’s Supermarket, Elizabeth, Filicious Creole Restaurant, Banks DIH and DDL, who have donated water for the participants.
Peaches Taxi Service of Mocha and Ras Dellon have combined to provide transportation and Leon Walcott has donated the certificates to be presented.
Meantime, France along with Dennis Burns will be attending the annual Terry Fox run in Canada set for September 12. France will coach Burns, Andre Richardson and Prince Bedlow at the New York Marathon fixed for November 1.
