Largest gathering of riders ever to assemble
Based on reports coming out of the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport, ‘The Big Ride’ set for tomorrow afternoon is expected to see the biggest gathering of riders ever in the history of Guyana.
This activity which is opened to all and sundry throughout the length and breath of Guyana will move off from the University of Guyana Public Road at 17:00hrs to end at the Carifesta Sports Complex, Carifesta Avenue.
Prizes are at stake for the village with the most riders, organisation with the most riders, best uniformed group, largest youth group and the Ministry with the most riders.
At the launching press conference for this event which was held on August 7, Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony had stated that the ride will be used as a build up to the annual five-stage race set for November. “Instead of waiting until that major event I felt we can do something to build up activities and one of these activities is The Big Ride. This activity is intended for anyone who has a bicycle, all you have to do is to have a bicycle and come out and ride with us.”
“If this one is successful, our intention is to have it in other regions as well. We are very confident by the response we have had so far that this event is going to be quite successful.”
The activity is in keeping with their ‘Fit for Life’ thrust that the Sports Ministry has embarked a few years ago. Dr. Anthony believes that it is time organisations focus on the values of fitness and getting them to ride is one of the ways of achieving the goal of getting a more fit and active population.
The Ministry was expected to verify all the applications sometime yesterday afternoon to get a true picture of the number of persons from organisations expected to take part. Reports are that members of the Disciplined Forces are also expected to participate.
