Kings, Bulls, Pistons, Royals on show
By Edison Jefford
The tournament was initiated in Linden last year and a Georgetown club won in a manner that continued a rivalry that could last a lifetime. The second Brusche’s Classic basketball tournament will eagerly commence tonight.
The venue is the Mackenzie Sports Club court and the teams include Kings and Bulls in a mismatch first game and Victory Valley Royals versus Wismar Pistons in a game that has all right to be the feature encounter of the night.
The tournament was launched earlier this week and includes defending champions Courts Pacesetters from Georgetown and the City’s number two ranked club, Dyna’s Ravens and six other Linden clubs for a $100,000 top prize.
Kings should easily overcome any challenge that Bulls offer tonight since they are easily the superior team in the match-up. Bulls have Terrance James and Kurleigh Austin on the offence but the two of them cannot do it alone.
On the other hand, Kings can use this game to fine tune their skill for tougher games and will be keen to maximise the uses of national players Marvin Hartman, Steve Neils Jr and centre Alonzo Hartman to gain easy advantages.
The second and featured game is not that predictable because it brings together two of the best teams in Linden with national champions, Wismar Pistons taking on the top ranked Royals in the win or go home competition.
Royals have perhaps the best forward in Guyana, Dwayne ‘Sugar’ Roberts with adequate support from Orlando Glasgow and sharp shooting junior sensation, Chris Williams. It is a game fitting for the latter stages of the contest.
With Royals proving that they have both an inside and outside game, Pistons will have to be clinical with their offensive exchanges. They will be under pressure to convert because they cannot afford too much turnovers in the game.
Pistons have Quincy ‘Prag Z’ Jones, who is arguably the best garbage player in Guyana. He gets the points that no other player is able to get, which makes him very difficult to defend. Jones is always a shrewd competitor.
In addition, the national champs have guard Nevin Grenville and forward Trevor Profitt as part of their arsenal. The three players will combine in an effort aimed at toppling the defensively tough Royals on the opening night.
