Dear Editor
What is happening with West Indies cricket specifically regarding the team to represent us at the ICC competition in South Africa next month?
Just prior to the commencement of the series against Bangladesh, the West Indian cricketers represented by the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) went on strike.
They made themselves unavailable for the two-test series and the first two of the three ODI’s. The results we all know.
Enter CARICOM. A meeting was held by the Chairman of CARICOM, our own President Jadgeo and the two parties, WICB and WIPA.
The strike was called off thereby making the players available to play for the West Indies again. Yet no one from the initial players selected to play against Bangladesh was selected for the 3rd ODI and the Twenty-20. No one said anything, maybe because the ODI series was already lost with only one match to go.
However, the WICB said that those selected as the initial players from whom the touring party of 15 or 16 would be named and which didn’t include the senior players, would not be changed even though, according to the ICC rules, they have until 22nd August, 2009 to make changes. That was more than two weeks ago, yet not a word has come out of WIPA to date.
If we look at this matter from an industrial relations perspective, then once the strike has been called off and terms of resumption worked out and agreed upon then these terms must be adhered to. This was the role of Mr. Jagdeo. Did the terms include, “No Victimization’’, which is always one of the terms of resumption to end a strike? If it did then WICB is in breach of those terms. If it didn’t, by some oversight by the CARICOM Chairman and Chairman of the meeting that worked out those terms of resumption, including the appointment of a mediator, then the WICB is taking advantage of this omission.
This victimization of the senior players by the Board is unacceptable. It is urgent that the Chairman of CARICOM call in the two parties immediately and clarify this matter.
The cricketers who went on strike are available, therefore they must be considered for the ICC championship. What is also strange is not a word of protest has come from WIPA. President Jagdeo must act now; only five more days remain to change the team.
