Oluki Ian Lewis, of 80 Zeelugt, North, West Coast Demerara was fined $30 000 and slapped with a four-year jail term yesterday when he appeared before Magistrate Priya Beharry to answer charges of ingesting 66 cocaine pellets, weighing a total of 1,082 grammes.
The prosecution stated that on August 17 at 04:00 hrs, Lewis checked in at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, to travel to St. Maarten, aboard Caribbean Airlines flight #460, and was observed acting suspiciously by a CANU officer as he attempted to pass the internal scanners.
It is said that Lewis was sweating profusely although the location was fully air-conditioned, which prompted the officer to further detain him for questioning.
He was subsequently taken to the Woodlands Hospital where x-rays revealed strange objects inside his stomach. Medication to prompt excretion was given and he expelled the 66 pellets of cocaine which were exhibited in court.
There were ripples of laughter in court yesterday when in his response, he begged for leniency telling the Magistrate the act he committed was ‘a decent crime’.
Lewis during investigations had also admitted to taking the same substance to St. Maarten before he was intercepted on August 17.
