There has been a great deal of controversy surrounding the Stanleytown Pump Station, on the West Bank of Demerara, with some interestingly misleading responses following this publication’s exposé.
In the course of our duty to be independent, truthful and balanced, Kaieteur News has now been reliably informed that the pump and engine may actually have in fact cost far less than indicated.
Documents supplied to Kaieteur News from the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) as the engineer’s estimate lists the cost of $58.5 million to supply and install the 150 cusec 15ft TDH line shaft pump.
The contractor’s bidding price, according to another document, is $61 million. Harrychand Tulsi is the contractor who supplied and installed the pump.
The documents supplied to this newspaper also stated that the pump and engine were purchased from Couch Pump Company in North Federal Highway, Deerfield Beach Florida.
Kaieteur News contacted the company for a quotation on the pump, but was told by an official (replete with expletives) that the company does not deal with any newspaper companies.
It was also made clear that they do not get involved in government issues.
In our quest to get an estimate for the pump to ensure that the taxpayers’ dollars are being used to their optimum, offering value for money, Kaieteur News contacted Everglade Farm Equipment in Florida.
According to that company, that same size, make and model of the engine and pump is valued at $11 million.
Can the contractor, the engineer responsible and other Agriculture Ministry officials say what is wrong here?
A source close to the issue in the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority reliably told this publication that there is a contractors’ circle on the local shores who knowingly inflate the cost price for local projects? Is this the case with this and other projects?
