11 year-old Nirvina Goberdhan named Best Student
Eleven year-old Nirvina Goberdhan of Albion was named the Best Student of 3rd Republic Bank / Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club Summer Educational Camp which ended on Monday last at the Area ‘H’ ground, Rose Hall Corentyne.
Organised by the Farfan & Mendes under-15 and Pepsi under-19 cricket teams, the Camp which commenced on July 7th was held under the team’s self development programme with the main aim of preparing 50 grade six students for their entry into Secondary School, next month. The lead instructor was Senior Master of the Port Mourant Junior High School Rohan Etwaru. The topics dealt with included Mathematics, English, Social Studies, Integrated Science and Moral Education.
In addition lectures were done on topics of interest including HIV/AIDS, Peer Pressure, Drug Abuse and Personal Hygiene. The students were also coached in the basics of cricket, volleyball, basketball and chess among other games in an effort to get them involved in sports.
Secretary/CEO of the RHTY&SC Hilbert Foster hailed the outstanding work of the two junior cricket teams in organising the summer camp and urged them to continue to spread the “No to Drugs and Yes to Education” message to all young people.
The Secretary also praised the high level of discipline displayed by the camp members and called on them to continue that tradition as discipline is one of the keys to success.
They were also advised that the five years they would stay in secondary school were the most important ones in their lives, since education is vital for future success. “Always listen to advice of your elders, never give up on your personal goals and avoid at all times, Satan and his evil world of drugs, crime and pre-marital sex.” Foster advised.Best Student Goberdhan secured 99% at the end of the Camp test. Other awardees included the Most Discipline Player (Sandra Carpen), Most Committed Student (Lisa Marks), Most Improved Student (Osafo Profitt) with the Best Attendance award going to Steafon Jarvis.
The members of the organising clubs are expressing gratitude to Mr. Leon McDonald of the Rose Hall Branch of Republic Bank along with his entire staff, DTV-8, LRTVS CH10 and Mr. Rohan Etwaru for they cooperation in making this years camp a tremendous success.
