A heavy downpour during the lunch interval spoiled what was shaping up to be an interesting match between Jamaica and Dominica when play in the Regional Women’s 50-over cricket tournament continued at the Demerara Cricket Club Ground yesterday morning.
At the time of the stoppage Jamaica, invited to take first strike after calling incorrectly, were moments earlier dismissed for 183 in 46.5 overs. This represented a revival after Dominica struck thrice early in the innings to reduce the Jamaicans to 17-3 after the two openers Jodian Morgan and Herma Dawes, and the number three batter, Chedean Nation were all dismissed cheaply.
Morgan stayed around for 23 balls and compiled 9 runs before she was sent back LBW to Ular Delsole. Dawes’ stay was also very brief. She faced three balls before she was bowled by Bertina Birkett for a single. Berkitt also sent back Chedean Nation, LBW for 7 and Jamaica was in early trouble.
Shanel Daley then entered and played some enterprising cricket to guide her team out of trouble. She was eventually dismissed 9 runs short of a half century. Tameka Senford picked up from where Daley had left off and struck an entertaining 29 from 43 balls. Abbie Gaye Hendricks also contributed a vital 16 runs before she was stumped by wicket keeper, Tiffiny Graham under dubious circumstances.
Graham had collected the ball in front of, and broke the stumps before Hendricks could have planted her feet. The umpire apparently missed this infringement and stuck up his finger leaving Karla Cohen not out on 18. As the players wended their way to the pavilion for the lunch interval the rain came down in torrents.
Bertina Berkitt shone with the ball with figures of 10 overs, 2 maidens, 18-3. Ular Delsole and Anica Benjamin supported with 2 wickets apiece. Delsole sent down 4 overs without a maiden and conceded 17 runs while Benjamin bowled 9.2 overs, also without a maiden while conceding 38 runs. The Dominicans were a mite indisciplined sending down 54 extras.
While the players ate, the rain continued and after it had subsided, about forty minutes after the lunch interval, the DCC sward was inundated. The umpires conducted a cursory inspection at around 13:00hrs and decided to conduct another at 15:00hrs.
However, water had seeped under the covers while large masses were visible at various parts of the outfield and the boundary area. The second inspection was merely an academic gesture as the umpires called off the proceedings. Both teams were awarded one point for the drawn game.
Jamaica now with 9 points from three matches have qualified for the semi-final stage of the tournament while Dominica, already out of contention, chalked up their first point in the tournament after losing both of their games played so far to Barbados and St Lucia. (Michael Benjamin)
