Shakera Selman scampered a single off the 5th ball of the penultimate over to give Barbados a 5-wicket win against St Lucia on the Duckworth Lewis system in fading light at Everest yesterday to qualify for Saturday’s semi-finals of the Regional Women’s 50-overs cricket competition.
Set a revised target of 72 from 20 in the rain affected encounter, Barbados reached 72-5 after St Lucia had made 128 all out in 41.5 overs.
Both teams began the match with the knowledge that a win would enable them to join unbeaten Trinidad and Tobago in the semi-finals from Zone A.
Defending champions Jamaica (looking to make a clean sweep of regional cricket this year) and St Vincent are the other teams in the semi-finals.
Maria David battled the Barbados bowlers and an injury sustained in the her game against Jamaica on Monday to top score with 41 from 77 balls with 2 fours but only Pamela Alfred (34) and Verena Felician (12) of the other batters reached double figures on the large ground and docile pitch after St Lucia were invited to bat first in sunny conditions.
Leg-spinner and Player-of-the-Match Shaquana Quintyne, one of two 13-year-olds in the Bajan side and tournament took 3-26 from 10 economical overs and got support from off-spinner Charlene Tait (3-28 from 10) for Barbados whose only preliminary round loss was against Jamaica in the opening round at Bourda.
Forty-year-old West Indies Women player Pamela Lavine, the only centurion in the competition, again looked organized in her 18 after a shower at 13:19hrs reduced the Barbados innings to 20 overs when play eventually re-started at 16:25hrs but it was the pugnacious Deandra Dottin, also a West Indies female player, who put Barbados on course with a cameo 14-ball 23 which was decorated with 2 fours and a mighty 6, even as her team made heavy weather of the run-chase in overcast conditions.
St Lucia lost Tara Couis (4) at 9-1 but David, who later went to the hospital and was given a clean bill of health, added 57 with Felician for the 2nd wicket before Tait trapped Felician leg before.
Quintyne then removed Verna Williams (3) at 71-3, before David was stumped off Quintyne 7 runs later.
Alfred clobbered 2 fours and a six in her 52-ball 34 before she was 8th out; caught and bowled by small, who took 2 wickets, with the score 110-8.
After rain stopped play with Barbados on 8-0 from one over, faulty covers threatened to condemn the match to a no-result which would have resulted in the team with the better run rate going through to the semis.
However, the sun returned and Monique Best (5) was bowled by Phillipa Eudovic at 17-2 before the pint size Quintyne (7) was leg before to Williams at 36-2.
Yasmin St Ange who took 2-10, then removed the dangerous Lavine at 61-3 and Dottin, who hit the ball like a train, as Barbados slipped to 64-4.
Pamela Alfred got rid of Rashida Goring (1) with the scores tied before victory was achieved.
Host Guyana and Grenada, both without a win so far; face each other today at Blairmont in their final match and the focus for the Guyanese, apart from gaining a consolation will be for their players to try and impress the West Indies selectors who are expected to name a squad on Sunday for the regional team’s preparation for their tour to South Africa in October for an ODI and 20/20 Women’s cricket series.
