While host Guyana suffered their second successive loss (to St Vincent at the Police Ground Eve Leary), Trinidad and Tobago, who handed the Guyanese their first defeat, recorded their second victory of the tournament, defeating Grenada by 10 wickets at the Bourda Ground yesterday.
The girls from the Humming Bird country called correctly and invited Grenada to take first strike. Incisive bowling from Alisha Mohammed (3-12) with support from Stacy Ann King and Anisha Mohammed (3-21 and 2-9 respectively), restricted Grenada to 73 all out in 38.5 overs.
Amanda Samaroo and Devita Singh opened the Trinidad innings and between them hit off the required total in 15 overs. The win improves Trinidad and Tobago’s points tally to a flawless 8 points in two games to stay in contention for championship honours. Samaroo stroked 38 and was later adjudged player of the match while Singh supported with a plucky 21. The extras accounted for 17 of the required total.
While Singh stolidly played every ball on its merit, Samaroo attacked the bowling with gusto and brought up the 50 with a stunning boundary, the second of her innings, in 12.2 overs.
She followed up with a savage drive through cover off Afy Fletcher shortly before lunch was called with the score on 60 without loss. Samaroo was then on 31 while Singh was on 22 with the Trinidadians needing another 14 for victory in the 14th over.
Earlier, it was Singh who unleashed a savage cut through point that fled to the boundary off the bowling of Rokhell Williams.
Shortly after the lunch period the two hit off the required 14 runs with Samaroo formalizing the victory with a powerfully struck boundary.
Earlier, Marilyn Nelson opened the Grenadian innings. She compiled a painstaking 18 off 73 balls before she was eventually caught by Stacy Ann King off the bowling of Anisa Mohammed. Rachael Cyrus and Susan Redhead followed in quick succession, both by the run out route after contributing 3 runs apiece as Marilyn Ettienne (10) and C. Seetalall 10) were the only other batters to score double figures.
Afy Fletcher was next to go. She made 5 runs and then surrendered meekly, caught K. Alexander, bowled Stacy Ann King. Debbie Ann Lewis was then sent back, caught Anisa Mohammed bowled Stacy Ann Lewis for 2. Anisha Thomas and Marilyn Ettienne were then dismissed in quick succession. Thomas was bowled by Alisha Mohammed while J. Polucksingh bowled C. Seetahall.
The last 2 batters, Rokhell Williams and Aria Fortune, surrendered their wickets cheaply. Williams made a solitary single before she was dismissed, caught and bowled by Anisha Mohammed, while Fortune was dismissed, caught Anisha Mohammed, bowled Alisha Mohammed for 2, leaving Helen Hunt not out on a single.
