– as fatalities climb to 70
The East Bank Demarara public road has been the most deadly route this year for commuters, according to statistics released by the Police Traffic Department.
A Senior Traffic official told Kaieteur News yesterday that 70 people, including nine children, have perished in road accidents this year. Fourteen (14) of the victims perished on the East Bank Demerara public road, while 12 perished on the Corentyne public road.
In contrast, 73 people, including three children, perished during the same period last year.
The most recent fatality on the East Bank Demerara occurred on Sunday, when Barama Timber Company employee Albert Pearson, 59, and his wife, Alicia Pearson, 62, died on the spot near Friendship, after being struck by a pickup.
The traffic official said that the driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol and will be charged under the new breathalyzer laws. The victims were on a motorcycle when they were involved in a head-on collision with the pickup. They were flung into a trench and were already dead when residents dragged them out.
Mrs. Pearson is the eldest sister of Deputy Mayor of Georgetown, Robert Williams.
The driver reportedly told police that he lost control of his vehicle after his air bag accidentally opened.
Last July, Richard Chinian, 23, Asheeki Asgar Ally, 19, and James Sookdeo, 23, all of Lot 50 Covent Garden, died after a car they were in crashed into a lamp-post near Providence, East Bank Demerara.
On July 6, Onica Holder, 22, of Annandale, East Coast Demerara, perished after a speeding car she was in smashed into a utility pole near Grove, East Bank Demerara.
In June, 25-year-old Mary Sandy, a mother of four, was killed after being struck by a car while crossing the East Bank Demerara public road, near Providence.
