A Barara Timber Company employee and his wife perished shortly after 19:30 hrs, when a pickup slammed headlong into their motorcycle near Friendship, East Bank Demerara.
Albert Pearson, 59, and his wife, Alicia Pearson, 62, of Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerraa, were flung into a canal and were already dead when residents dragged them out.
Eyewitnesses said that both victims sustained multiple injuries and would not have survived anyhow.
According to reports, the couple, while heading home, was travelling south along the East Bank Demerara Public Road when the pickup, which was heading in the opposite direction, slammed into their motorcycle.
Pearson and his wife were pitched into a canal on the eastern section of the roadway. The pickup also ended up in the same canal.
A female resident said that she was with friends further up the roadway when she heard a loud sound. On reaching the scene, the woman said that she and her husband saw the pickup in the canal and the mangled motorcycle on the roadway. The woman said that they then spotted Alicia Pearson floating in the canal. They pulled the already dead woman to land but there was no sign of the victim’s husband.
She then noticed several bubbles in another section of the canal and, on checking the spot, the residents located Mr. Pearson’s submerged body.
Kaieteur News understands that the detained driver
has told police that he was heading north along the roadway when something hit his vehicle. This allegedly caused his air-bag to open, and he reportedly lost control and ended up in a trench at the eastern side of the road.
Relatives told Kaieteur News that Mr. Pearson has been employed with Barama Timber Company for over 16 years.
The victims are survived five children.
