Another witness was taken into custody after she gave conflicting evidence when the Preliminary Inquiry into the murder of schoolgirl, Roshnie Pertab Singh, called, Indira, of Number 19 Village, East Coast Berbice continued on Friday at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate, Chandra Sohan.
Narindai Gobin also of Number 19, who was in the witness box on Friday, changed her story from what she gave to the police in her statement after the incident.
In that statement, she stated that she identified the body of the deceased and witnessed the post mortem examination at the New Amsterdam Hospital Mortuary.
In Court on Friday she changed her story drastically, stating that she cannot remember what took place on the day. She said she cannot remember if she was at the mortuary on that day.
When further questioned by Magistrate Chandra Sohan and Prosecutor, Karim Baksh, she admitted she was at the Hospital, but said that she cannot remember anything since she had blacked out. She denied giving the evidence that was in the statement.
She was subsequently ordered arrested and taken into custody as the police launched an investigation.
Earlier in the trial, main prosecution witness Budia (only name) called ‘Dodo Gal’ at whose house the victim was alleged to have been murdered, also changed her story when in the witness box from the statement she gave to the police.
She was deemed a hostile witness and her matter has been sent to the DPP for advice. Singh who was a student of the Berbice Educational Institute at the time, would usually sleep at Budia’s house to keep the woman’s company.
Also testifying on Friday was Deodat Persaud, a relative of Singh also of No. 19 Village.
On Trial for the Murder of Singh, who was also alleged to have been raped, is Seenarine Ramnarine.
The Prosecution is contending that between, June 6 and June 7, 2006, at Budia’s house at No. 19 Village East Coast Berbice, Ramnarine raped and murdered Roshnie Pertab Singh. The victim who was also a Sunday School Teacher was at the time in the process of writing her CSEC exams.
Ramnarine is being represented by attorney at law, Michael Sommersaul.
The PI continues on September 4.
Last week also in Berbice, prominent attorney Murselene Bacchus was charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.
It is alleged that he bribed a witness in another murder trial so that she could alter her story.
