No one, absolutely no one in this life, in this world at the present time can convince me that the Vishnu Bisram thing about Jagdeo being accepted for a third term was not a conspiracy. I will not dignify Mr. Bisram fictional operations that he is known over the years for by discussing him and his so-called polls. We need to focus on the timing of the Bisram public relations stunt for certain people.
No adjective would be too harsh to describe those who feel that Mr. Bisram did a poll. The mere results should galvanize you into questioning the timing. Right in the middle of the Ramsammy madness, Mr. Bisram tells us that Ramsammy is the most popular of all the current members of the Cabinet.
If you believe that then you have to believe that Adolph Hitler is hiding out in Israel. This is not the only public relations gem certain people thought they had purchased. The term third calypso is another one. For four successive days, the Guyana Times and the Chronicle sermonised on the possibility of Mr. Jagdeo running for the PPP in 2011.
Now, important to note is that both papers, with different editors, were very similar in how they presented the third term calypso and the days they played the tune. It cannot be a coincidence.
Some person or persons instructed both newspapers to saturate their front pages with the third term song. It is the first deliberately planted story that the third term scenario is on. It is definitely on. My take is that Mr. Jagdeo will secure the nomination from the PPP executive to be the party’s presidential candidate for 2011.
It is interesting to note what happened last year at the election for the executive committee that followed the PPP’s congress.
Frank Anthony brought third in the congressional voting but didn’t win election to the executive committee. Mr. Reepu Daman Persaud, in his late seventies and not in the best of health, pulled votes. So did Mr. Nokta. Both men are pro-Jagdeo. Mr. Persaud in his Hindu sermons in his church openly preaches a third term for Mr. Jagdeo. I heard him on television calling for this.
There is a mountain of evidence from the past sixty years to guide the researcher as to how the PPP will select its main man for 2011. The PPP never, I repeat never had a democratic session in which their contestants, in any crucial process, openly and fairly won their votes. It was always a fixing affair.
Every congress from the fifties onwards has had votes arranged. The main man for 2011 will be chosen by the Executive Committee. It will be Mr. Jagdeo.
That is a foregone conclusion. The curiosity centers on how Mr. Jagdeo’s advisors are going to get around the Constitution. We come now to the nature of dictatorship. One of the characteristics of dictatorship is that it becomes over-confident after consolidating power so easily.
The thinking of the dictator is that he/she is invincible, invulnerable and omnipotent. Rationality and reason are causalities of such a mental state. Dictatorship then becomes impossible to rein in. The absolute leader will embark on a self-destructive course and then implosion occurs.
If you examine the historical record, this has been and is the pattern with dictatorships.
The third term planners will not get a referendum and will not get the desired two-thirds parliamentary majority. A path similar to the one chosen to prolong the life of the Ethnic Relations Commission will be taken. The Constitution is evanescently clear- the ERC needs a two-thirds majority to bring it into existence.
Yet the Government has given it life after its physiology had stopped. The PPP Parliamentarians are going to table a motion to allow Mr. Jagdeo to run again. That motion will be interpreted to mean that it has the power to overrule the particular article that prevents Mr. Jagdeo from seeking a third term.
It will be as barefaced as that. Any citizen that has watched the degeneracy of the PPP since 2003 would have had five years of evidence and facts to guide them as to the nature of the PPP’s dictatorship in this land. These people do what they want, the absurdity, comical nature or tyrannical component of their output is something they just don’t care about.
The Parliament will give Mr. Jagdeo his third term facility but it is doubtful that many stakeholders will keep their calm over the issue. It may be the straw that will break the camel’s back. Just remember – dictatorship does not operate with rationality and logics.
