Defence Headquarters (DHQ) retained the male Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Inter-Unit Athletics title while Base Camp Ayanganna (BCA) took away female honours when the curtain closed on the annual event yesterday.
DHQ recorded 206 points to lead Training Corps (159 points) and Engineers (157 points) in the male competition as BCA edged Base Camp Stevenson (BCA) with a total of 164 points. BCA had 144 points and Coast Guard 34 points.
Leana Doris and Wilbert Mingo were adjudged female and male champion athletes when the individual points were tallied. While the event seemed to lack public support, the top bracket of the GDF turned out in their numbers. Quincy Clarke stormed his way to a sprint double when he dominated the 100 and 200m races with times of 10.6 and 21.57 seconds respectively. The Training Corps athlete gave his team an early advantage in the competition.
Patrick King was second in the 100m with a time of 10.9 seconds while Jermain Newton finished second in 11.3 seconds. King also came second in the 200m with 22.00 placing Rupert Perry in third with a time of 22.35 seconds.
Wonnetta Wayne followed in the her male counterpart’s footsteps with her sprint double when the BCA athlete sprinted to a 13.2 time in the female 100m and 27.60 in the 200m to complete consistent performances in the sprint events.
Kim Daly (14.1) and Monique Skeete (14.2) finished second and third in the 100m while Ashante Carrington and Skeete placed second and third in the 200m respectively with the clock reading 28.90 and 30.7 in that order. Training Corps Jermaine Newton won the male Lieutenant 100m race in a time of 11.1 as Royston James finished second in 11.5 and Wyette Nestor third in 11.8. Kesha Aaron won female version with Renea Peters second.
Drumson McCullay won the Captains 80m race for DHQ with a 9.7 time with Infantry’s Gordon Nedd second in 10.0 and DHQ Ron Daniels third in 12.6. Kenneth Semple’s first place in the Invitational 100m was assured.
The race only had two competitors with junior Chavez Ageday being the other and it was practical to assume that Semple would win the event that attracted much more support in the previous years of the competition.
Odelle DeSantos claimed the 800m male race in a time of 2:06.3 while Oral Young ended second in 2:09.4 and Raymond Alexander third in 2:10.4. Doris won the female version with Ashanti Scott in second and Felicia Sullivan third. Scott turned the tables in the 3000m with a time of 12:15.48 restricting Doris to second in a time of 14:03.06 and Delecenica Junior to third in 15:00.06 as DHQ swept the event at the BCA ground on Thomas Lands yesterday.
Mingo claimed the male 5000m race with Young second and Ryan Jeffers third. Defence Headquarters’ Carrington won the Shot Putt event with Rose Lord in second and Cuffy Russell third in the field event.
Wesley Gordon won the male Shot Putt event with Lincoln Fraser second and Royston Crandon third. Renea Peters was the winner of the female javelin throw leaving Petronie Hibbert and Mennis Barton in second and third.
Raymond Alexander edged Shen Fung in the male javelin event with a distance of 48.89 compared to Fung’s 47.96 best throw. Delon Young finished third in the event with his best throw of a 44.87 distance in the heated contest.
