Police yesterday detained four people and recovered a shotgun during a massive operation to track down a gang of gunmen that has been terrorising residents of a Friendship, East bank Demerara Squatting community.
Some of the gang members have also been implicated in a spate of murders going back to the early period of the crime wave, and also to the more recent murders of Kaneville resident, Brendon Charles and Peter’s Hall shopkeeper Dewan Roshan.
One of the suspects, known as ‘Pressure’, was arrested around 04:00 hrs in Bagotstown. His girlfriend was also detained.
Police said that the man is a prime suspect in the murder of businessman, Dewan Roshan, who succumbed a few days after being shot in the stomach during an attack by two bandits on his Peter’s Hall premises last June.
Another man, known as ‘Tree Dog’, was grazed in the head by a bullet fired by police ranks while fleeing from a house in the Friendship Squatting area, East Bank Demerara.
Some residents claimed that the man was not a gang member but was involved in a fight with his reputed wife.
The man and his girlfriend were subsequently detained.
Police also recovered a shotgun and several rounds of ammunition on a backdam in the Friendship community where some of the gunmen are believed to be hiding.
Kaieteur News understands that police have traced the shotgun to a Friendship resident.
Police are said to be looking for at least three other alleged gang members, known as ‘Orpheus’, ‘Mad Dog’, and ‘Reds.’
Police said that one of the men is wanted for questioning in connection with the murder of Brendon Charles, who was gunned down in a yard last week, in Kaneville.
Charles was buried today. Charles’ relatives blame the same man and his accomplices for the deaths of Brendon’s two brothers, Deion and Devon Charles.
Kevin Charles alleged that the family was being targeted because they were being falsely accused of having links with the ‘Phantoms’.
According to Mr. Charles, some of the gunmen
alleged that one of his sons was responsible for the death of Devon Cambridge, whose bound and bullet-riddled body was found in a D’Urban Backlands trench in 2006.
Yesterday’s arrests occurred as police ranks conducted one of their biggest operations since the dismantling of criminal gangs on the East Bank of Demerara, after residents complained that they were being robbed and terrorised.
Around 04:00 hrs yesterday, several vanloads of armed police ranks descended on Bagotstown and the Friendship squatting community. The ranks scoured the backlands, which is overrun with dense bush, but were unable to locate any of the main suspects.
