As XV Goodwill Swim Meet splashes off this evening

Guyana’s 16-member squad to the 15th Goodwill Swimming Championships are all expressing confidence of medaling when the competition gets underway this evening at the Wildey Aquatic Centre, St. Michael.
The team along with the officials and a number of parents arrived in the Land of the Flying Fish yesterday afternoon at around 14:00hrs via Trinidad and Tobago from Guyana.
They took the opportunity to rest yesterday and are scheduled to have a brief workout in the competition pool this morning ahead of action this afternoon. The official opening ceremony is set for 16:30hrs with pool battles set to splash off half an hour later and is expected to go well into the evening.
Guyana’s young charges are under the guidance of Head Coach Nicholas Fraser and his deputy Christopher Mc Adam, both officials expressing confidence that their charges will deliver the goods.
Events are slated for the first day in the various age groups, 8 & under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-17.
Events 1 – 8 will be the 200m freestyle which will be followed by the 100m butterfly (events 9-14); 50m backstroke (events 15-25); 50m butterfly (events 25-34); the 4X100m freestyle relay, events 35-40 bringing an end to the first day’s action.
Tomorrow, day 2 will get going at 07:30hrs with warm ups, actual competition starting at 09:00hrs. The 100m individual medley for 8 & under swimmers; 200m for 9-10 and above; 100m freestyle; 50m backstroke; 4X50m medley relay for 8 & under and 9-10 and the 4X100m medley for 11 and above swimmers will all be contested. Sunday is the final day of competition and Guyana will be aiming for their best year yet at this level.
Defending champions Suriname from all reports have come with a strong team as well as Trinidad and Tobago, the host team will not be lying by and allowing the visitors to walk away with the top trophy but only time will tell.
Grenada has been invited by the host Association as the guest team this year.
