…mother’s former lover being questioned
The search continues for four-year-old Varsha Singh who mysteriously vanished from her parents’ home in the wee hours of Monday morning last.
Police have detained a male friend of the child’s mother who they believe could provide vital clues to her whereabouts.
The child’s mother recently severed her relationship with the man and had returned to live with her husband over the weekend.
It is believed that her male friend may have something to do with the child’s disappearance since the child’s brother reportedly saw him in the family’s Leonora house early Monday morning.
Kaieteur News understands that the missing child’s mother, Parbattie Motieram, was living with the man at Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara. After encountering problems in the relationship, she decided to reunite with her husband at Leonora.
This angered her former lover who reportedly issued several threats to get her to reconsider her decision to leave him.
The woman told a Probation Officer that the child, a student of Exe’s Nursery School, was given a cup of water before she retired to bed around 23:00 hours on Sunday.
Motieram said that she awoke about 05:00 hours on Monday and discovered the child missing.
She raised an alarm after she realized that an inner door to the entrance of the house was open.
Neighbours and relatives launched a search but the child was not found.
The matter was reported to the police and this newspaper understands that the child’s parents, her mother Parbattie Motieram and father Surujpaul Singh, were detained, questioned and released on Wednesday.
Motieram’s lover was subsequently detained after police received information that the missing child’s six-year-old brother had seen him when he intruded the property early Monday morning.
Several other persons were questioned but up to yesterday, the police had no definitive clue on the child’s whereabouts.
Relatives said that they do not believe that any harm has been done to the child but they are convinced that she is being held against her will.
Anyone knowing the whereabouts could contact 264-2457.
