Windies ‘stars’ will not be considered for S/Africa tour
The services of West Indies cricket Coach, Australian John Dyson have been terminated with immediate effect while former West Indies off-spinner Lance Gibbs will replace Trinidadian Omar Khan as Manager of the team which will compete in next month’s ICC’s Champion’s trophy One-Day tournament in South Africa.
The Assistant Coach, Mr. David Williams will fill this position on a temporary basis for this tour.
Khan has been temporarily assigned to the preparation and management of the West Indies Under-19 team for the International Cricket Council’s Youth World Cup in New Zealand in 2010. The West Indies youth team will also participate in the Regional senior One-Day competition from October 28 in Guyana.
The decisions were taken on Wednesday at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the West Indies Cricket Board Inc. as the Regional Team prepares for the Champions Trophy tournament.
The Board had previously agreed that a selector will travel with the team on all overseas tours. The Chairman of the Selection Committee, Mr. Clyde Butts, will therefore accompany the team on this tour. Meanwhile, it is understood that despite the results of the ongoing mediation between the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA), the West Indies ‘star’ players will not be considered for the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa next month.
WICB director Paul Campbell and President of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) told KLAS Sports radio in Jamaica on Monday stated that the WICB had “reaffirmed” its stance that the final 16-man squad for the limited-over tournament “will come from” the provisional 30-member contingent announced a month ago.
Former Commonwealth Secretary General Sir Shridath Ramphal, 80, has been mediating the process to resolve the bitter and seemingly unending impasse between the WICB and the players association, WIPA.
But the board’s pronouncement, though through one of its directors, could dent any possibility of an agreement, which comes on the heels of Ramphal’s stated disappointment that the mediation process has made “little progress”.
According to Ramphal, the mediation process does not affect the West Indies authorities selecting the best team to represent the region at the Champions Trophy from September 22 to October 5.
However, with the board’s unrelenting stance, the West Indies team will be without the likes of Captain Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Dwayne Bravo and Denesh Ramdin, among others.
Guyanese Travis Dowlin, Leon Johnson and Chris Barnwell have been picked in the 30-man squad while their countrymen Sarwan, Chanderpaul, Sewnarine Chattergoon and Narsingh Deonarine have been ignored by the board although they are now all available for selection.
