…GWI places blame on GPL
Residents living in Uitvlugt Sideline Dam, West Coast of Demerara, are complaining that they have not been receiving an adequate supply of potable water for the past three weeks.
One resident from the area, Mohamed Khan, told Kaieteur News yesterday that although he has been making numerous calls to the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) office in Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, he has not received an official explanation from the water company as to the reason for the problem.
The man added that the water supply would be available for a day or two, then, it would stop flowing for approximately an entire week.
GWI has reported that this problem is as a result of constant power outages by the Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL).
When contacted yesterday, Public Relations Officer of GWI, Rawle Aaron, told Kaieteur News that over the past few weeks, West Coast Demerara has been plagued by constant power outages, and as a result, their pump station would ‘shut down.’
He added that when electricity is restored, the pump would take quite a while to become operational. During the power outage, the water pressure would drop to zero.
“When the electricity returns, you have to wait until the pump is propped up so the residents would have to wait a while before they start receiving water,” Aaron said.
He explained that these residents receive water from the Leonora Pump Station, and since they are at the end of the line, they are the last to get water.
According to Aaron, the network is designed in a way to fill all the lines simultaneously, in order for residents to get equitable distribution of water.
Meanwhile, Aaron said that GWI is working closely with the authorities of GPL to address the power outage, in order to bring relief to its consumers.
He noted that the possibility is being explored to place standby generators at some pump stations.
According to Aaron, GWI cannot afford to place generators at each and every location, since such an exercise would prove to be very costly.
