A vendor in the Stabroek Market appeared before Magistrate Priya Beharry on two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm.
It is alleged that Vanessa Samuels, of Palm Street and D’Urban Streets, unlawfully assaulted Shaundell Griffith and a Ms. Callender, causing them both actual bodily harm. The accused pleaded not guilty.
The Police Prosecutor stated that Griffith and Callendar had approached Samuels at her stall to purchase some bananas. Upon inspection of the fruits however they found that they were not of good quality, and refused to buy them.
Allegations further state that an argument erupted among the women, during which the defendant threw pepper sauce at Griffith and Callender.
Attorney-at-Law Mohamed Zafar, representing Vanessa Samuels, told the court that his client was not the one who was involved in the fighting, that it was in fact her sister.
He further stated that his client was sitting idly by while the women argued.
He added that his client owned a fruit stall, and that there was no pepper sauce within her reach.
The Prosecutor however told the court that the defendant got the pepper sauce from a nearby stall, and then threw it at Griffith and Callender.
Zafar also asked that Magistrate Beharry consider that his client is a single parent of a twin. He requested reasonable bail which was set at $25,000.
Samuels is expected to return to court on November 10.
